I stayed in Puerto Morelos for a whole month in July of last year, and while I enjoyed the town for the reasons you've stated here, living there year-round is absolutely out of the question. When I was there, it was brutally hot and humid to the point that you didn't even want to be outside most of the time, and at dusk the mosquitoes come out and eat you alive. Also, the beach is inundated with seaweed that time of the year, making it not at all pleasant to swim. I could certainly see visiting again during better times of the year, but not living there full-time.

Yeah, Iโ€™d agree with your choices and price points should be sufficient for most who donโ€™t need to be constantly entertained with expensive activities/drinking habitsโ€ฆ. As a single guy who is still far off from plopping down in one spot, Iโ€™m more of a slow traveler myself. I stay somewhere until Iโ€™m ready to leave or have to, due to visa constraintsโ€ฆ. I have zero problems staying in a hostel for weeks at time and have done so many times in the past, hahaโ€ฆ Iโ€™ll usually just spend time on my computer in the common areas when not out doing something. This also makes it possible to stay in cities like Kuala Lumpur & Bangkok for easily under $1, 000/mon. But the hostel lifestyle isnโ€™t for everyone.

Nice break down of these three price points. The mediterranean comment was eye opening, "...harder to get a $5 meal in the mediterranean vs Latin America." Being from the US I'm considering Mexico or Central America, namely Guanajuato, Querรฉtaro, Oaxaca. Boots on the ground next... ๐ŸŒด

Excellent topic and great presentation. As it happens.. I'm entering Thailand soon and heading to Krabi.. Klong Mueng or Chong plee areas... A little outside Krabi Town.

All those $2k places all have "cold" winters for me. No thanks :)
I've been fortunate enough to have lived in 8 of your recommended locations ๐Ÿ™
Thanks for the video.

Great report as always Dan. I wonder why no one (on any YouTube channels) ever mentions Roxas City (the seafood capitol), a nice beach town in the Philippines? Iloilo and Bacolod are two others. All three are cities with some amenities, off the beaten path and much less expensive than Manila or Cebu City. Anyone retiring on $1, 000 per month or even less could be happy there.

Dan, completely agree. Exploration is the key to a good retirement. Stay in a place for a minimum of a month to get the feel of the people, culture, and environment

Once again incredibly valuable information Dan and Qiang. Obviously in any list like this you have to leave out a bunch of equally wonderful places. But that is why the "Slow Travel The World" philosophy is so appealing. Each traveler makes their own list(s) over time. Many Thx! JC

This is all based on retiring in one country, however majority of us prefer "slow travel around the world concept" with maybe "home base" in one such country with an easy access to an affordable airport. Having that in mind, would not Medellin (Colombia), Belgrade (Serbia), Kiev (Ukraine), ... make it to such list? In general, some Eastern Europe countries are great home base (using winter months for slow travelling around the world concept) + you really need "home base" more and more, as you are getting older.

Great Vlog Dan, great subject matter... I like how you broke it down by price point... Obviously it a very Important to stay with in someone means... Strangely, even though my budget is higher I still prefer Asia... Just not curious about Europe, and somewhat concerned about safety in Central America, I seem to remember to many revolutions in the past...

Mexico also seems like a possibility as long as I don't run into the Mountain Police...

Looks like I will be leaving earlier than I planned due to Social Security income restrictions next year... So I am excited to get started with my New Life of Retirement... But I will miss all my friends here in New York City... But as the Master Kan stated "It is time for you to leave."

Malaysia has a min. liquid asset requirement of 350000 MYR requirement (about 85000 USD) and 150, 000 MYR in a Malaysian bank as well as you have to have a monthly income above 10, 000 MYR (about $2450 per month) this is waved. Hardly $1500 unless you're constantly hopping in and out of the country on visa runs. There is no tourist multiple entry visas just for business and government.

Great advice retired expat for many years been to and agree with the many places you mention. For me also weather/climate is a giant factor. I do not like humidity heat or extreme cold. I also like cheap airfare and short flights from the US. For this reason Colombia in the mountains(around Medelllin and Pasto(very cheap) and Ecuador (Cuenca and Loja) from $1K/month were great. Cheap 3 hour flights from FL on Spirit Air. Having a bit of spanish to navigate around is a plus but not essential.

Vietnam has not been a retirement destination for over 7 years because of strict visa requirements. You either need to get a work permit and TRC or do 3 monthly visa runs.

Other than that, Vietnam is awesome. Wonderful people and country.
