Fall Cool Season Lawn Seeding Tips // When? What Grass Seed?

With lawn renovation season just around the corner I have been receiving a lot of questions on when you should seed your cool season lawn in the fall and also about what grass seed to use. Cool season lawns are best seeded in the fall with soil germination temps high and weed pressure beginning to diminish into the fall. You want to plant the grass seed about 8-10 weeks before you first frost. As for grass seed, quality and elite cultivars of seed make a huge difference in a lawn! Buy the best grass seed that you can afford for you renovations as it will pay off in the lawn in the end.

Wow, Ryan... long time subscriber and something of a lawn enthusiast myself. Finally and at long last someone with talent, intelligence and passion has put together a beautifully produced YT channel for the rest of us to help bring our own lawns to their very best condition. I commend your work, your knowledge and enthusiasm for residential lawn care and maintenance. I have followed your examples and literally transformed my hard, weedy, thin, ugly yard into the most amazing lawn I have ever had. Thanks to you, my lawn stands out from my neighbors and is something to be proud of. Thanks again Ryan, for this outstanding content, and all the hard work you do to produce this channel!

Ryan! I ran out of time this autumn to sow seeds & get them germinated. Our summer temperatures were record high & I noticed some areas, with the bald spots, weren’t getting water. I just completed a sprinkler/irrigation overhaul but it’s too late for seed germination. I would recommend you make a “dormant seeding” video. There are a couple out there but none as good as your production quality.

This is a plug for seed superstore.
Best lawn on my block with seed from Lowe's. A beautiful lawn is the work( weeding, mowing, fertilizing and watering etc.) you put into it.

I was looking up the super seedstore just this morning. I bought from them last year and like the way the grass came in. I was looking to work on my back yard that is mostly shade👵btw I put down tttf mix that they suggested for my area.

😎👊. Nice really nice video! You got confidence, I don’t think I would have any. I would be doubting everything. You are good at what you do! Btw, thanks for the pregame video before Jimmy Lewis! 👌

Seed super store is awesome. Bought my seed from them last year. I was a bit late putting it down (mid September) and all my Kentucky Bluegrass seeds survived through the frost (don't recommend though) and the even though with the slow germination, the young grass survived the winter. High quality seeds, you definitely get what you pay for.

Some seeds are more expensive per pound due to seed size. Like bluegrass seed is very small and per weight has much more seeds per LB than PRG

Do you need to roll in seed when overseesing? Ive read that it can furtger compact the lawn. My plan was to dethatch with the Greenworks machine, plant the seed, and then cover with oeat moss.

I am in Iowa, too. But just had work done in my back yard and now have bare dirt before winter. Is there anything I can do now(end of October) to control erosion(slight slope), and get a head start on the spring growing season?

Will you be putting down a pre emergent once the new turf comes up

Ryan, have you gone a local extension office in your state and volunteer to the Master Gardener Program? Some place specialize in turf and have land space available and access to seed varieties. It is only an application and a little volunteer work to get the title.

I would greatly appreciate some help here. I’m doing a complete lawn renovation this fall. I live in NJ and according to historical records, first frost is Oct 21-28. I am planning to lay down the seed around the second week of August. The main reason I’m doing a complete renovation is bc I have more weeds than grass. It is spring now (mid April), can I apply preemergent now or will that greatly diminish fall seeding results? When should I use glyphosate to kill the existing lawn? Will that be enough to prevent weeds from taking over when I sow the grass seeds?
