1. Drive slow
2. Don't carry unnecessary weight
3. Check your tire pressures and air filter
4. Lose weight
5. Walk to work
6. Don't drive up hills only drive down
7. Tie a tow strap to the front recovery hooks and the other end to the back of your belt and pull the Tacoma.

All you gotta do it just take it easy. I drove 25 minutes home at 65 on the freeway on 33s and i was getting 21 to the gallon. Now i'm down to 13 because i floor it everywhere 😂

I’ve been driving my Tacoma for almost 5 yrs.
I got to say. Leave early and take your time getting places. Relax, enjoy your truck. Take the slow lane sometimes, don’t tailgate. And you will see your gas mileage increase.

I drive 60k miles per year for work and I’ve tried every trick in the book for mileage. Your mild driving tip is spot on and probably number 1 in saving gas. If you have to make a hwy trip sometime, try leaving a little early then drive 68 instead of 75. I gain about 2 mpg just doing this.
Next is tire pressure… this is a balance. Hard tires have less road friction and roll easier. My tires have a max pressure rating of 50 or 51 psi cold so I run 40 in them. Above that and the tires start wearing out the center tread too fast. 40 psi gives me even treadwear and I normally get 70k or more on my AT’s.
As far as bed covers, running with the tailgate down and so on, I never really noticed much difference as long as the bed is empty. Mythbusters have an episode with vehicles in a wind tunnel and all that will explain that better than me.

I have a 2020 TRD Off-Road 4x4. What helps me the most is staying under 2, 500 RPM and not accelerating hard. If someone is tailgating behind you don't speed up for them. Let them pass or merge over to the other lane. I go about 65mph-75mph on the highway. If I can, ill put the adaptive cruise control on and stay behind a semi truck which does improve mpg since the wind isn't hitting the truck or something.

I did those things above today and averaged 20mpg on a 12 mile trip. I think that's pretty good considering it has heavy running boards, skid plate, tonneau cover, and luggs around the extra weight from being a 4x4. I'd say 4 miles of that 12 mile trip was street too and the other 8 miles was highway.

I learned very quickly this is NOT the vehicle to drive hard in or joy ride around in all day every day unless you want to live at the pump. If you're looking for that then you probably want to consider another vehicle or a 2nd vehicle that would be better for that. It might be mid-size but it is a truck therefore you must treat it as one.

Sometimes I think - If I were to do it again I may have gone with a SR5 4 cylinder 4x4 and just added some minor things to it (seat covers, better shocks, better rims, light running boards). I got the off-road to replace my Jeep that I used to do crazy shit in. The Off-Road is crazy badass but I don't off road as often anymore now due to new job and I also don't tow anything with my truck except some light hauling in the bed sometimes. Still extremely happy with my decision but wish I could foresee that life was gonna change in a way that would make the truck overkill. Could have used the slightly better mpg more than the rugged off-road features nowadays. But atleast I can whip it out when needed. Ya never know! Crawl control and rear locking axel can be handy..

Brand new 2023 Trd pro and getting 18 mpg if lucky.

Mine is Lifted and i have 275/75/17 I noticed that if you keep the RPM under 1500 you can make up to 23 MPG, try it I promise it'll work, you'll make like 58 MPH but you get use to it.

Bed covers make mpg worse. Look at the air flow on a truck with tailgate up it’s actually better

Was mildly concerned when the Tacoma I got a few weeks ago had the 2.7.. but I’ve been averaging well over 25 mpg with mostly city driving. Ontop of its insane reliability, I’m stoked.. slow as a dog tho. Lol.

Truck cover 100% the biggest factor. I was averaging 18 without one, I have a diamondback and now I average 21mpg

Hate to break it to you, but putting a truck cap actually uses MORE gas. The aerodynamic of a truck creates a vacuum pocket inside of the bed which forces air to move over the bed. This means that it’s actually more aerodynamic to have the cap off and the tailgate up

0:35 Agree.
0:37 Yes, accelerating hard isn't great for MPG, but it is only really bad if the rapid acceleration is followed by braking. If you floor it from 0-70 and then drive 10 miles at a steady pace vs. half throttle it from 0-70 and then drive 10 miles at a steady pace, the difference in fuel consumption is negligible. Flooring it then slamming the brakes to travel 250 ft from stop sign to stop sign vs soft acceleration to a slower top speed then coasting the rest of the way 250 ft will favor the slower acceleration.
0:42 Yes, braking too often is bad for MPG. The less you need to brake, the less energy you waste, and the less gas you need to burn to get back up to speed to get where you're going. This ties into driving habits.
1:02 Yes, a good thing to know the condition of. The engine pulls the same amount of oxygen, it's just a dirty air filter increases restriction and that means the engine has to work harder to pull in the same amount of oxygen.
1:30 Agree, very good to know your tire pressure, and you want to stick to the number on the door jamb sticker or up to 4 psi higher (you want more pressure in your tires when your vehicle is loaded up close to the max weight rating). Cranking tire pressure way up to save fuel will cost you more in the long run because your tires will wear out sooner and the reduced grip is also dangerous, especially in inclement weather.
2:01 Bigger tires are bad for MPG, but they also mess up your odometer reading, which makes your MPG look even worse than it really is. Going 200 miles on a 31" tire when you have a 32" tire means your odometer will only register 194 miles, which makes 20 MPG look like 19.4 MPG.
2:34 Agree, poor alignment does harm MPG and accelerate tire wear.
2:56 That's ridiculous. The best way to warm up your engine is to drive it gently. That way you warm up your transmission too. Idling is awful for MPG and even in really cold weather, you are good to start driving after 10 seconds. The key is driving it gently. If you can keep it under 2000 rpm for the first 3 minutes or so, awesome.
3:08 The weight of the bed cover will completely wash away any aero MPG gains. Yes, both are highly neglible. The bed cover is great for securing your valuables or for protecting stuff from the elements, but it won't affect your MPG at all.
3:32 Agree, excess weight is bad for MPG. The less unnecessary stuff you carry, the better your MPG can be.

Now I want to add that your cruising speed is very important. For a manual vehicle, 25-35 mph is going to give you the best MPG, while and automatic does the best at 35-45 MPH. The further away you go outside that range, the less your MPG will be. My 2.7 Tacoma is most efficient at 38 MPH in 5th gear. I arrived at this figure experimentally with my scangauge 2.

I get 20mpg in my Tacoma with some simple habits. 1: take out unnecessary weight. Us truck owners up north like to keep a 50lbs sandbag in our bed for better traction in the snow, if it’s not snowing take that thing out! Some people even take the spare wheel off but I keep mine just in case. 2: only drive to places you actually need to go, the less you drive the better mileage you’ll achieve. 3: keep your truck washed and waxed, now this isn’t a proven theory but in my opinion if a car is shined and waxed the wind will slide right off of it as you drive, therefore being more aerodynamic. 4: check tire air pressure after every fill up also check oil level after every fill up and top off as needed. 5: tonneau covers don’t provide too much aerodynamics but it’s better then nothing so invest in of those.
Hope these tips works!

What kind of gas do recommend to use for the Toyota Tacoma sr5

PrestonKent-zwct

My average tank is around 20-22. Stock tires, SR5. Sometimes on highway i get like 28mpg. I keep the RPMs low. Hypermile tip try to coast as much as possible, leveraging all your momentum. Not great in traffic 😂

The best I have gotten on my 2019 trd 4x4 is 25.9. That said I got rid of my oe tires and went with pizza cutters 245/75/16 Cooper Discover which weigh 37pds each versus the 44pds Goodyear wrangler. I just came off a road trip with my rtt above the bed and still got 20.5 mpg with my bed fully loaded and mountain bikes.

a little over a month ago, i purchased a 2021 Toyota tacoma sr5 w/6 foot bed.. at first, i was averaging about 16 to 17 miles a I'm now getting 21 to 22 miles a gallon.. what changed? well, I added a tonneau cover, I make sure to check my tire pressure, and I'm a lot lighter on the gas pedal, I don't gun it unless i have i step on the pedal lightly, i try not to do a lot of stop-and-go, in other words, i try not to lay heavy on the brakes... and now I'm getting better gas

Found a new setting today. I️ haven’t seen anyone talk about it but it’s annoying to only access the “tank average” if you go to settings on the steering wheel under (drive info 2) it can be changed to overall average or a lot more settings.
