When performing the leg press during quad workouts (or glute workouts, depending on which one you're targeting), always make sure your body is firmly planted in the seat. If you use the leg press machine by holding your hands behind your head, or on your knees or your chest, not only will you be making it a less effective quad exercise/glute exercise (since you lose leverage against the weight) but you also increase injury risk from your back rolling off the seat. If you're doing this leg exercise in your leg workouts then make sure to hold onto the handles at all times to maximize your strength and reduce low back stress.

People coming up with those weird hand rest positions always amaze me. Its almost like.. they put the handles on the machine for a reason

NOTES:

Depending on the specific machine and how heavy you're lifting, gripping the seat itself (on the side or front) might also be fine.

The extent to which you might need to actively pull yourself downward will also depend on the exact machine structure and how much weight you're moving.

The bottom line though is to just make sure you're fully stable within the machine with your low back and glutes firmly planted, and having your hands on your knees/chest/behind your head won't be ideal for that.

You should definitely cover how foot placement on the leg press will change which leg muscles are used ... Because it's not your hands that determine that

I found this out intuitively by going really hard on leg presses, I never thought to pull myself down until one of those brutal reps and I instinctively did it because I was desperately looking for a way to get more power. Funny how our bodies will sometimes do exactly what we need

During my 1st two sets, I don't grab the handles much simply because the weight is not pushing me up (probably I should, but I find it more challenging on that weight to not grab the handles), but once I reach my heavier sets I grab the seat firmly from the front lol....that glues me to it better than the handles on the side.

I like to hold the seat and actively pull myself in the seat, more comfortable to grip
