Working harder does not get you more pay. Bottom line.

This also highlights the importance of people knowing that they are not meant to be fully 100% productive 8hrs a day 5 days a week. There’s a problem in the US with workers not leaving their desk to take their lunch break and taking their lunch. Unions fought for this right and that’s also why I highly recommend everyone be part of an union.

True. Set boundaries early. Because if you give an inch they'll take two.

I work 35hrs a week but I actually ‘work’ maybe 20 hours a week- the rest is just making up the time and I don’t feel one ounce of guilt because I get all my tasks done😊

I want one of these magical jobs that don’t overwork you!

Yep. At my job I maybe do 4-5 hours of actual work in a 10 hour day. 🤷🏻‍♀️

I answer emails at 9pm because I feel guilty for getting distracted at 2pm.

Chelsea and TFD are teaching us how to dismantle the lies capitalism has told us and I really appreciate that.

At my old job, I worked myself to the bone, while you had some people in the break room taking hour long ‘15’ minutes breaks (side note - it was a VERY physical job).

Instead of actually expecting productivity from the people that weren’t working, they put more on the plates of the few people that actually did work. It really took a toll on my mental and physical health and I even had a talk with one of my managers about it. I could tell he really couldn’t care less and just wanted me out of his office.

In the end nothing changed at that job and I got to a point where I just couldn’t take it anymore. I quit after being there for almost 10 years. It really sucks because I will never be able to find a job that pays me as much as that job did (with no degree) and now I’m just scraping by.

Honestly, if everyone just did their fair share, the workload would have been completely manageable - but if you only have 20% of your staff working and do nothing about it, eventually that 20% is going to get burnt out.

For me it’s anxiety thing. My job is SUPER understaffed and I know that whatever I don’t answer now is going to be looming for Monday. I hate it :/

I am very annoyed with the idea of "I work 60 hours per week so it means i work hard" i have worked with several people like that and i often found they tend to create more email clutter, more bureaucracy but not necessarily more value. On the other hand if such a workaholic is your boss - run.

So true I did this for 9 years always being told it’s good exposure for me. I’ll get that promotion blah blah then I tore my ACL and couldn’t walk around NY. Still I waited 4 months to get surgery out of guilt. The week before I was due to go back to work HR called me to say I was laid off.

I cut my working hours to 80% in October last year and I have not missed any more or less deadlines that I did before. My performance and KPIs are pretty much the same, except my mental health has skyrocketed and, when there are actual issues, I am so much more capable of coping with the stress and keep the situation normal.

My current boss actually talked to me about working at 9 pm emails, he told me don't do that. Then explained he cared about my work life balance. I have never been at a company that does that, and I legit cried he cared about my sanity

Or to pretend to be sitting at my desk working when all my tasks are done...

I'm really well paid. The work does not go away if I take time off. If I log in on the weekend and get some things done at my own pace without any interruptions, it means a less stressful week.

I don't think it's automatically expected to continue to work on weekends and at night if you've started to. If it's a particularly busy day or week maybe you get a few more things done. It's the individual place of business that is putting that on to you then. I don't think you can say that as a blanket statement. I've worked on a sat for a few hours just cause it was busy that week and I wanted to shorten the list for the next week. It's not an expectation now .
