I am struggling with a child with RAD . I adopted her in 2018. She has broken my thumb threatened to break my foot. Stolen my clothes and shoes. She has been in constant therapy since 2018. She has periods of blind rage and afterwards reverts to a baby and baby talk after it is done and she does not remember what happened afterward. She tells me frequently that she wishes I was dead or that I should swallow all my pills so she can be happy. I have done nothing but love this child and attempt to find her help but honestly I live in fear that she will hurt or worse me. I am literally at the end of my rope. I hope this will help.

And paradoxically, you can't love a RAD child better because too much attention/love can be triggering to them (personal experience.) It's really important for care givers to recognize when a RAD kid needs space to be alone to process stuff - don't push!

RADs don't care about 'corrections.' They steamroll everyone and everything in their path due to their lack of frontal cortex neurotransmitter development. They live in survival and impulse mode and do not prioritize any long term planning. I thought this would help, but RAD cases I am familiar with often not going to respond well to this treatment. The rule of three implies that a RAD will have empathy and not rage and attack you. My house is our family prison cell, and there is no hope. We just wait for the bombs to drop and brace ourselves for the blast, protecting the other children as best we can in.

Cute, out RAD son, age 15, can pretend to have these 4 basic skills in front of teachers, counselors, and social workers. Once they are gone, the retaliation begins and the gloves are off. We’ve tried for almost 9 years. After he tried to murder me and continued to threaten to do so in the hospital, we’d like to just walk away. But no one wants to help us get him or us any help and the county will press charges if we refuse to take him back.

I would love to do this, but have issues with my stepson that we only have every other weekend, every other Thursday, half holidays, and summers. Can this work for us?

Why go to the trouble of creating parenting methods for Reactive Attachment Disorder when it is so rare a disorder? Some experts doubt that there are any cases in the USA it is that rare. I suspect that this disciplinary method is tied to "Attachment Therapy/Parenting" which is not considered appropriate parenting.
