Don't forget these things when setting up your foster home

This is for my first time parents who plan to foster. (That was me!)

I know there is a lot of emphasis in setting up the bedroom but don’t forget about the rest of the house! Friendly items in all spaces of the home can help these spaces seem more approachable and help kids feel more at home.

When I first started I didn’t really have kid stuff other than their room and the playroom. 🤷‍♀️🤦‍♀️ I wish I had more friendly (and soft) things from the beginning. Seems obvious but it wasn’t to me… hope this helps someone!

Thank you for actually taking care of the children that come in your home, a lot of the foster families that I was placed in were only their for the money, and I have see a lot I have been in and out of the system since I was a baby

Ive carried this through my whole life. There are 2 blankies for each seat area and soft pillows everywhere. When a kid needs comfort, they don't always show it. Self soothing can be helpful. And might open their hearts a bit. All we need is a crack and we can show them they can trust us.

I love your channel. I wanted to foster for years and years or be a host family. Your videos are full of insight and you offer tools that we can all incorporate into our lives. Thank you!

Consider a painting rail system! That way you can super easily swap wall decorations, for example in kids rooms. You can have some options in store so they can choose something on their own to personalize their space.

It’s too early for Halloween!! But yes, all houses (particularly foster homes) require a lot of blankets!

My fosters all love Halloween, just not the scary version of things. They have all been younger, like elementary and preschool age, so very into dress up and pumpkins and candy. With holidays, it can be best to follow their lead.

I was a foster parent for over 25 years. We celebrated Halloween and Dia de los muertos.

Friendly front doors! Such a good tip I think we can all remember being physically smaller and how every huge house was an even bigger unknown

Besides the Halloween part, I became very touched and teary eyed with what you shared. Watching your videos have been so heart warming and I believe you are really helping those kiddos when they enter your home and are now helping those who wish to foster or already are, and benefitting the children. I love kids so much and I’m so thankful you’re filled with such love for them.

I don’t know why but the “friendly faces” with the pup got me. I would imagine dogs or cats could potentially be such a huge comfort in a new house during a traumatic situation. Not that that’s what you were saying, but just thinking out loud. 😅
