One thing I'd say is that if you live in a very small space (Say, a 300 sqft), and your style is more minimalist, you may want to opt for a more discreetly-sized and colored rug.

What do you suggest for two rugs that are close together ie. the dining room and living room that are a few metres apart

I don't recommend polyester rugs at all for high foot traffic areas. Mine has crushed and matted because it's in our loungeroom. Stick to low pile rugs that will last longer and use polyester for areas that don't get used much.
