Project Rene/ Sims 5 Canceled?

The sims 4 franchise certainly has critics, from bugs to broken gameplay and some saying that the pack/ dlc organization is far too expensive. But just ahead of the release and stream for sims 4 lovestruck, the new expansion pack, rumors abound this could be the end of the sims franchise (with the cancelation of sims 5/ project rene).

The truth is more complicated.

Stay tuned for sims 4 news, reviews, commentary and more.

I'm just really sad that everytime a game is cancelled people get fired, in my opinion they should try include the employees in other projects every time it's possible

sad that i'm at the point where i'm hoping project rene does end up getting cancelled. i really want maxis and EA to course correct away from whatever live service multiplayer crap they're shoving into this game. i just want a normal, offline, singleplayer sims game

Honestly, Sims 4 needs massive fixing and they should not release half baked packs before they jump on the new project… pardon my negativity but one should not simply release half baked produce and expect others to buy it especially in this economy

Sims 5 would be bad anyway. I'm moving to Paralives.

I wouldn't be completely surprised if it turns out to be canceled. Given how long it has been in development combined with how little information has been made available, the game seems to be in some kind of development hell. It also seems like an unnecessary money pit for EA since Sims 4 packs are still selling extremely well, and those are developed on a shoestring budget by a skeleton crew. It would also explain why EA suddenly decided to start fixing Sims 4 bugs, updating it to DX11 etc., as developers and testers were moved from Rene to Sims 4.

I just think it is unreal that when the sims 4 was announced i was still in high school...

It´s kind of strange that they say its sims 5 and not Project Rene that is canceld. Have EA ever called it something other then Procet Rene?

The only people who need to be laid off are EA's board of directors. :/ LBY being canceled? It is all connected. Greed...and other unsustainable and frankly criminal business practices. Good luck with the move! Settle in, don't worry about us. Thanks so much for your continued content. And of course welcome to your new home! 🤗🤗🥰🥰

Considering how little we've heard about Sims 5 lately I can see how this rumor started. It will be interesting to see how this all plays out. Good luck on your move!

i‘m mentally begging for larian to create a life sim and using bg3 features like the dice rolling system for randomness, skills and proficiencies, different backgrounds etc. but just set in a regular world, or even medieval. and staying adult themed. i would assume there is a lot they could use and reuse from bg3 and it would be something super different on the market and could draw in people from multiple fandoms.

The cancellation is for the PS5. The game for that platform may have been cancelled, but might not be the PC or other platforms - yet.

If they ever do cancel it I hope it doesn’t turn into another sims 4 situation if they decide to rework it once it’s cancelled like how TS4 was originally supposed to be an online game too. I really don’t want another broken sims game.

I’m a little surprised because Palia, from everything I’ve seen, has gotten a of backlash. People were hugely excited and then it got a ton of hate on release, due to not being at it what it was promised. However with all the other amazing Sims like games coming out, they may have delayed it in order to go back to the drawing board to figure out a way to make it more innovative, new, attention grabbing, because in this market? It’s going to need to be FABULOUS. Seeing what all these other sims games are going to offer first might not be the worst idea.

Also, as someone in the translation and localization field, I can tell you it’s a TOUGH job market right now. There are layoffs left and right.

My baseless theory? They're going to try to develop Sims 5/Project Rene for the next generation of Play Station, so are pausing the project until they have some idea of what that is going to be. if the XBox is still heavily based on PC architecture then that might be easier to adapt to newer machines, so it'll remain an offshoot of the the PC code.

well I pray that paralives, and inzoi work out and that there is no giant paywall idk we will see. I would be ok with a small one, but not one like the sims 4, that one is like the great wall of china

Speculation time! They fired their staff that work on the console versions in order to cut down their payroll while they wait for it to be a more complete version then will hire an outside company to reconfigure for consoles e.g. Rockstar Games. As someone who has the Sims 4 on PS4 it is very clear they don't have a dedicated console team so maybe hiring an outside team would be beneficial. It really sucks that they lost their jobs though, instead of being moved over to other areas cause the sims needs so much help. Good luck on the move btw!

I don't see Project Rene is cancelled entirely, I do believe they scrapped the PS5 version with a possibility that PS5 has been around for quite some time and perhaps they speculate by the time Rene is out, PS5 is no longer relevant. So might as well drop it and maybe develop another version for the new console later in time.

That being said, the lack of updates from the Rene team is a hotbed for rumors and misinformation.

Tech companies - to include gaming companies - do hire/fire phases. On the upswing, they hire (overhire)...on the downswing, they cut lots of people, to show investors they're doing well with their money. There's a channel - Moon Channel - that has a great video essay about how it works! Nintendo is basically the only gaming company that doesn't embrace this scummy practice. There's a reason lots of companies have record breaking years...then go on to lay off lots of people. It's part of the cycle! It's to win over investors. I highly, highly recommend Moon's channel, he's a lawyer and always does VERY thorough research on his topics.
