When I run, I breathe through my nose and mouth at the same time for maximum intake. I used to only breathe through the nose, but my running team coach called it out and taught me to breathe through both at the same time. It leveled up my running :) I run over 60 miles a week now, and it’s all while breathing though my mouth and nose at the same time.

It looks like "the virgin mouth breather vs the chad nasal breather..."

I wish my gym teacher explained it this way instead of just saying “you get more air through two holes than one “ 🤦🏼‍♂️

I'm super allergic to dust, it completely stuffs me up and makes breathing through my nose impossible. Once I started cleaning the fans/air condioners in my house more it made such a difference on my life. I started breathing through my nose easier, I found weightloss was easier, my anxiety levels weren't so high. It sounds silly to equate all these things to breathing through your nose but it for sure has a big role in it!

No doubt. When I run I began to notice that while I was breathing though my mouth, endurance and explosiveness were often lost. Breathing through one's nose – especially during strenuous exercise, is not easy but once you get your head around it, you can't go back. Great images, by the way!

If you are reading this here's my story. I am a 25 year old boy from sri lanka. mouth breathing since I am 6 years old. I have a pectus excavataum since birth and according to doctors my nasal septum has been deviated after an accident when I was 6 years old. that cuased me to breathe through my mouth for more than 20 years. I was thinking that the nose is to smell and the mouth is to breathe for this long. in 2023 may I did undergo open septorhinoplasty surgery and now I am perfectly nose breathing and having a great sleep. this video is true and I had all the bad effects of mouth breathing such as low stamina, poor posture, crocked teeth, dry mouth, less mindfulness and all. now after the surgery I am experiencing all the good effects of nose breathing and truly Im feeling like a newborn. I am eagerly waiting to see my transformation day by day

I decide to concentrate on deep breaths when I find myself daydreaming. Just to fill cells with oxigen and interupt a bad habit with a good one. It made wonders, improved productivity, consantration on small tasks. Now I know the reasons
In the age of information and hedonism, glad to be a shape shifter,

This is fantastic. The past year or so I've noticed an pretty substantial increase of snoring, dry mouth, bad breath and anxiety and I've had little understanding of why. Today I've found out that I totally mouth breathe and Ive started practicing nasal breathing! Thank you!

I'm born with a nasal defect where the flap that splits air to the nose and mouth isn't closing properly, so I've been forced to always breathe through my nose - it comes with some downsides like speach impairment and blowing up balloons, but I can feel all of the effects you are talking about in this video and have been aware of them for a long time but I have never known the science behind it, Thank you! You're videos are really well made, gonna go on a binge now!

It is also common for some people to have trouble nose breathing because of respiratory problems, such as constant cases of rhinitis or nasal septum deviation. On those cases, it is nice to see a doctor for professional help

a lot of this is very true, breathing through your mouth does activate your parasympathetic nervous system, as someone who have a phobia i can tell you for a fact that when the body goes into fight or flight response you will start to hyperventilate.
however hyperventilating is also being not really explained that well, your lungs do need some of the CO2 and when you hyperventilate your pushing out too much of it because your body is in survival mode it will trigger a response to use your body to the max, like sprinting for your life or something similar that require a lot of air to your muscles quickly, but if that's not happening you might get trapped in a state of hyperventilating because it feels like you can't breathe and that's because you're low on CO2 so your fooling yourself into trying to breathe more than you need to.

this is why you will see people who are hyperventilating breathe into a bag because they will rebreathe the CO2 down into our lungs again which might dissipate the feeling of not being able to breathe, this is also why you will hear about trying to breathe slowly or taking deep breathes to calm down.

now i don't know in which end you've started to breathe with your mouth over your nose because it can be that you're just anxious and your body will automatically do that, however you might also be feeling more anxious just because you're breathing with your mouth starting a vicious cycle.

but yes if you breathe with your nose you will breathe more deeply that activates the diaphragm which keeps you calm and collected and you do get enough air breathing through your nose in most activities.

but i suspect there's more to this than just "breathe with your nose" because it's something we do innately, the reason we don't is more complex, it can be poor diet, poor excercise, poor nose function, poor posture etc.
in some cases it's a bit like the chicken or the egg, sometimes it's because something else is not right with you that you do breathe with your mouth instead.

so i would recommend walking or any low effort activity where you're moving your body and trying to integrate this nose breathing as best as you can to get used to it.
and yes you can breathe too much to where you feel you don't get enough air, it's stupid like that.

literally been doing this since i was a very lil kid. Im glad that there were people who pointed out certain things to me in life. One thing that I realize just now. Sometimes I do breath through both my nose and mouth as well when running, but I tend to push my jaw forwards while doing this. I just felt that it made me breathe easier. Now that I see it being explained in the video, it all makes sense. We should listen to our body and instincts more often

I can't recommend James Nestor's Breath book enough. This should be thought in schools and just common knowledge.
So sad even doctors don't seem to know about how many issues are tied to breathing.. Thank you for bringing attention to the importance of breathing correctly!

I wish I had seen this video when I was a kid. I have been mouth breathing since a pretty young age, and can relate to all the issues. I'm gonna try nasal breathing now and hope that my posture and facial structure gets better!
