One of the most important messages that Oxygen Advantage® teaches is to keep your mouth closed and breathe through the nose.

What many people do not realize is that the mouth serves little to no purpose when it comes to breathing other than for emergencies. Excessive mouth breathing can worsen many conditions including asthma, rhinitis, COPD, anxiety, panic disorder and chronic sleep apnea to name just a few.

Using nasal breathing we can ease the symptoms of these and many other conditions but that’s not all. Nose breathing helps us in many different ways both physically and mentally.

In this video Oxygen Advantage founder and Director of Education and Training, Patrick McKeown explains the 7 ways nose breathing is better than mouth breathing.

1. Protects the upper airway.
2. Protects the lower airway.
3. Harnesses nasal nitric oxide (anti-viral / anti-bacterial).
4. Harnesses more of the diaphragm which helps stabilize the spine.
5. Better recovery post-physical exercise.
6. Exercise with the mouth closed improves the utilization of oxygen.
7. Reduced air hunger leading to more efficient and economical breathing.
