Nose Breathing Benefits - Oxygen Advantage

Benefits of nose breathing with Patrick McKeown.

The Nose:
- One of the first lessons in the Yogi Science of Breath is to learn how to breathe through the nostrils and to overcome the common practice of mouth-breathing.
- Many of the diseases to which civilized man is subject are undoubtedly caused by this common habit of mouth breathing.

Benefits of nose breathing by Dr. Maurice Cottle, who founded the American Rhinologic Society in 1954. Your nose performs at least 30 functions, all of which are important supplements to the roles played by the lungs, heart and other organs.

Nose breathing imposes approximately 50 percent more resistance to the air stream than mouth breathing during wakefulness, resulting in 10-20 percent more O2 uptake.

Nose Breathing Benefits:
- Warms and humidifies incoming air.
- Removes a significant amount of germs and bacteria.
- Increased risk of developing forward head posture, and reduced respiratory strength.
- A dry mouth also increases acidification of the mouth and results in more dental cavities and gum disease.

Mouth breathing:
- Mouth breathing causes bad breath due to altered bacterial flora.
- Proven to significantly increase the number of occurrences of snoring and obstructive sleep apnoea.

Nitric Oxide:
- Nitric oxide (NO) is released in the nasal airways in humans. During inspiration through the nose, this NO will follow the airstream to the lower airways and the lungs. Nasal derived NO has been shown to increase arterial oxygen tension and reduce pulmonary vascular resistance, thereby acting as an airborne messenger.
- Since NO is continuously released into the nasal airways the concentration will be dependent on the flow rate by which the sample is aspirated. Thus, nasal NO concentrations are higher at lower flow rates.

The Diaphragm:
- Mouth breathing is considered an abnormal and inefficient adaption of breathing mode and it may induce functional, postural, biomechanical and occlusal imbalances.
- To evaluate diaphragmatic amplitude (DA) in nasal and mouth-breathing adults. The study evaluated 38 mouth-breathing (MB group) and 38 nasal-breathing (NB group) adults, from 18 to 30 years old and both sexes.
- Mouth breathing reflected on the lower recruitment of the accessory inspiratory muscles during fast inspiration and lower diaphragmatic amplitude, compared to nasal breathing.

The Benefits of Diaphragm breathing:
- 16 athletes during an exhaustive training session. After the exercise, athletes were divided into two equivalent groups of eight subjects. Subjects of the studied group spent 1h relaxing performing diaphragmatic breathing and concentrating on their breath in a quiet place.
- Results demonstrate that relaxation induced by diaphragmatic breathing increases the antioxidant defense status in athletes after exhaustive exercise. These effects correlate with the concomitant decrease in cortisol and the increase in melatonin.
-Diaphragmatic breathing reduces heart rates, increases insulin, reduces glycemia, and reduces free-radical production as indicated by the higher antioxidants levels.
-The consequence is a lower level of oxidative stress, which suggests that an appropriate diaphragmatic breathing could protect athletes from long-term adverse effects of free radicals.

I am 30. and i have every issues like mouth smell, snoring, acidity, high BP, no jawline, leaned body posture, bad face structure, speaking from nose, short breathing/even faint in running, can't sing.. after having sinus problems and eustachune tube blockage, i decided to study diaphragm and nasal treatment videos. Doctors even never give such advice.. never found any video as close to my problems as this. Thank you Sir... Respect from India.

I am a very successful high school track athlete and for the 4/5 years as a runner I was a mouth breather. I started nose breathing while running and what surprised me the most was that my jaw was forced forward. By the end of a 30 minute run I would have to begin mouth breathing because my jaw muscles were too tired from being in their proper place. Fortunately my jaw muscles have improved and now they no bother me after about 5 runs since nose breathing. My cardio has drastically improved and my mouth no longer gets dry. every time my mouth gets dry it results in a bad run but with nose breathing that is no longer a problem. What I have taken away from nose breathing is that my airways have expanded, I can run faster for longer and my mouth no longer dries up which acts a a placebo for a bad run. I also found that because I was breathing heavily through my nose, all the built up mucus is blown out. I know that a build up of mucus in the nose is a fast way to get sick so this is a nice way to mitigate a build up of mucus

I moved to nose breathing incidentally 7 months ago, not having seen this. Happened at times I went vegan which removed mucus from my sinuses and could so much enjoy breathing. I have started feeling so much better, could not revert and happy now seeing this

I inhale thru my nose and exhale thru the nose when I run, I find this much better than exhaling thru the mouth. So inhale thru nose and exhale thru nose, and I can run much longer.

For most of my life people have asked me what is my key to good health. My primary answer has always been: "breathing thru my nose". I have found that most people think they have no control over their health.

I feel so good about myself knowing I'm a natural nose breather. Probably the only thing I've done right and it's totally unintentional

Thanks for this information, Patrick.

I had been living the first 24 years of my life with a nasal obstruction. (A deviated septum and enlarged turbinates).

I had surgery to clear my nasal obstruction, and immediately after having healed up enough to breathe through my nose I noticed numerous quality of life improvements. No more daytime yawning, less brain fog.

I noticed I still had a dry mouth though from overnight mouth breathing, and I tried taping my mouth shut while sleeping. It was such a drastic change:
-Sleeping 7-8 hours now instead of 10+. I wake up feeling refreshed.
-Constant fatigue gone.
-My concentration is better, no ADD medication required.
-Nasal breathing during exercise has massively improved my exercise induced asthma, I ran 5ks consecutively for the first time ever, with little challenge. Before I'd get an asthma attack in a matter of minutes from exercise.
-Decades long depression gone, I think my poor sleep was impacting my mood far more than I could have ever guessed.

Thank you so much!

I taught myself how to nose breathe when I was around 8-9 years old when I figured out that I could control or recover from an asthma attack by breathing through my nose rather than my mouth.

The calming effect is interesting because I have always been the one my family came to in a crisis as I was the calm one. I never thought that nose breathing would count toward that.

Just watching this video made me check to see that I was nasal breathing and I was, haha.

It also must be why I hate it when I have a cold because its tough to breathe through the nose and have to mouth breathe which feels kind of weird.
