I agree. I have AR’s with dots, magnifiers and traditional scopes. For me, it really depends on your use case. For home defense, a simple red dot is my preferred. Throw a magnifier on it if you want to increase capability without getting a whole new setup. If you have a rifle that’s going to be used mostly beyond say 50 yards, an LPVO makes more sense. For beginners that are mostly concerned with home defense or urban/suburban SHTF, I usually recommend a simple red dot.

Hit the nail on the head for your explanation of red dot vs lpvo. I started with one and realized I was never really chuting farther than 200y. Bought a Vortex Huey to try out before selling my lpvo, and fell in love with it. I do think I want to build another rifle and throw a lpvo on it in the future.

I definitely prefer LPVO with an offset red dot for any barrel size that's 14.5+ inches. Anything under 14.5 inches is a red dot and a 3x magnifier. That's just me personally

For me 100yds & in = red dot/magnifier, 100yds & out = 6 or 8 power LPVO. I can use a LPVO at closer distances, and the red dot/magnifier at further distances, but I think that’s where they’re best at what they do.

It all comes down to the purpose of the rifle . Cqb ? Red dot all day long . Long distance with small targets ? Lpvo no debait there . I run my ar-15 in IPSC rifle matches . Shooting paper from 5-100 yards and steel from 70-300 yards . Steel is 8-10" . Try shooting 8 metal targets at 300 yards measuring 8" with a red dot during a match ....My current ans favorite setup id a Vector Constantine 1-8 fiber dot Lpvo and a pistol size dot on a 45 degree offset mount . So I enjoy both with no compromise. Dot for close shots up to 50 yards and Lpvo from 60-300 yards

Depends on the dot.
Both have their pros and cons
But all in all a RDS with magnifier is the 90/10 optic set up.
Outside of a DMR I cannot find one reason that you would find where if you properly set up (36yrd zero) a red dot is mostly point and shoot out to 300 yards.
Personally the argument of PID in a law abiding civilization, using the lvpo as PID is a felony.
If they're that far away, use binos. Which you should have for more defined viewing purposes anyway.

Primart arms cyclops has an etched reticle. Technique its not a red dot, it has a chevron aiming point with lines for distance calculations

I don't like the reddot sights just because they cover to big of an area with the dot for precision shooting another up side to an lpvo is you only have one item to remove if something goes wrong with it and you can then use the backup iron sights.

I love lpvo's but for my regular use my red dots do just fine & normally what I go to
