2 words. Eye relief. I'm 6'4" so I run my stock fully extended and it stills feels like I'm humping a football. I have a red dot and magnifier on my 10.5 AR-15 and run an lpvo on my 20" ar10 (as Eugene Stoner intended). My sight acquisition is so much faster with a red dot.

Having used both for work, I prefer the magnifier. 1x on a LPVO is not true 1x and it can be noticeable in awkward shooting positions. Not to mention the weight. Carrying a rifle for days on end, you notice. With a magnifier, if it's not needed you can take it off the rifle and stow it. And even if stays on, the "balance" is not thrown off. It's a fine choice, as are LPVOs

It's funny because LPVOs are actually heavier and add even more moving parts. In all seriousness, though, I do run a Sig Tango on my AR-10, and it's pretty great, but I do thing magnifiers have their place in some builds.

I have both, love them both. The dot and magnifier comes with the bonus of being able to remove the magnifier and use it as a looking glass without brandishing your rifle.

The main advantage is that you can have the eye relief, zero parallax, night vision passive aiming and fast target acquisition of the red dot, but then you can magnify it on demand. Also, I have an astigmatism and I shoot my Eotech just fine.

A reflex optic is better for CQB and ranges of around 200 meters or less. Most people do not need magnification most of the time.The best optic depends on the needs of the user.

AR enthusiasts: The Army made a wrong turn championing the M14 because it obsessed over a longer range when all it needed was a lightweight rifle optimized for 300 meter engagements.

Well, for those of us that have red dots on shorter weapons but SOMETIMES need a LITTLE more mag, whether that's for target ident or just stretching the legs a bit, a magnifier COULD be the answer. It doesn't have to stay on all the time, just when you need it.... mission specific if you will

I'd wanna add another moving part because LPVOs are heavier than Prism or Dot+Magnifier combos, and they're nowhere near as durable as either. If you need Low power Variable, get an Elcan SpecterDR. Oh and good luck using an LPVO with NODs

I have both, mostly because I'm old enough to have or had at least one of everything from an Aimpoint Comp M2 to a Trijicon SCO and ACOGs and Eotechs in between. In my opinion, the biggest drawback to magnifiers is short eye relief. I've found that viewing a red dot through a magnifier helps with my astigmatism.

While you are at it, get a MPVO and learn to focus on target with the eye that is not looking through the scope at close range or just get a canted red dot with it. It’s great to have options, and a heck of a lot of fun to try them all.

So I’ve had both. To a degree I miss the red dot with magnifier, however for any non short build rifle there no reason not to go LPVO. Price wise it’s a negligible difference.

I have a red. and magnifier set up But I also have it to where it is quick disconnect so I can still use my flip up sites
