I believe you should also have the political and economic power to meaningfully and effectively influence the breadth of your choices.
i.e. that store owner would see you as an important customer and respond with something like "I haven't got the broccoli today but can order and have them by Tuesday." but really if he were that kind of a business person you might have expected a better selection in the first
