I feel like the difference is "we can keep the same overall system with corrections" vs "we need a different system".

America has had a different view on liberalism. It’s considered leftwing when it traditionally is a rightwing ideology: lower taxes, fewer regulations, individual liberty etc.. Many American leftwingers appear to social democrats.

I guess it’s because of the Cold War where anything associated with the enemy of America, the Soviet Union, was considered evil. So American leftwingers had to call themselves liberals and progressives, and try not to use any words associated with socialism or communism.

In other countries liberal is always associated with the right wing part of the political spectrum. Liberal means a free market ideology, the opposite of a socialist view on the economy. Only in the US the refer to the people in the left as liberal.

That would just mean Americans finally start using the word liberal like the rest of the world: Right-wing economically, but left on civil rights/individual liberties.

Liberal used to mean free thinking, basically. So called "progressives" tote that leftist line and, in my experience are not very tolerant of those who do not. Difficult to have a conversation with intolerant people, whether they be on the left or right.

Liberalism never meant progressivism. It always was on scale of center-left to center-right. In Japan and Mainland Europe liberal actually means center-right politics. Before the breakthrough of Trump GOP was a liberal conservative party.
