How do you know if you should forgive someone for hurting you?

Often, we think that we should forgive someone only when the person shows that they deserve our forgiveness.

It's hard to forgive because it can feel like we're letting the person “get away with it”, like the hurt we feel was inconsequential. We have suffered so much and forgiveness feels like letting the person walk away with little or no consequences.

As human beings, it's natural to feel that way. We want justice and we want acknowledgement of our worth.

The truth is, our worth is not up to someone else to determine. Someone can treat us like dirt yet they cannot devalue us. No matter what someone has done, they cannot steal our worth. Other people's actions are not an indication of how worthy we are. Our worth belongs to us.

The other truth is that forgiveness is not about the other person - forgiveness is about freeing ourselves of the heaviness we carry around every single day.

We don't need to figure out if someone deserves our forgiveness. We just need to know that we are deserving of our own happiness. Because forgiving someone is exactly that - taking the power back over our own happiness.

When we let go, we stop letting the person have power over our lives. They may have hurt us, but they no longer control our emotions or our lives.

We can take any action externally - cut ties with someone, leave a job, break up, take someone to court or we may well decide to keep in touch or continue a relationship with the person who hurt us.

Whichever external decision we make, we have to make the INTERNAL decision to let go, because forgiveness is the mental and emotional action of unburdening ourselves and allowing ourselves the happiness we deserve.

Be happy, always.
