Why I Hate Neon Genesis Evangelion...

Neon Genesis Evangelion is a classic anime, and deserves it's respect for that, but I hate it for certain reasons.

I feel like Shinji’s alinear character arc was part of what made the character feel real. He did grow as a person and then regresses, and then grew and regressed. In real life, we never completely conquer our demons. The story never ends, but you still need to keep reading.

Pen Pen: Quack
EVA Fans: this quack is a representation of Pen-Pen’s insecurities about his identity, why he made a sound of a duck instead of a penguin, on why his soul and how life isn’t worth it anymore to him, this is masterful writing and extremely deep showing how even the most light hearted of characters suffer, Pen-Pen was there during 9/11, during the Holocaust, and the Second Impact, Pen-Pen is one of the greatest characters of all fiction and you just don’t understand him.

As an Eva fanboy, I clicked on this video faster than the speed of light.

This series was created while the author dealt with really bad depression. As he drew it, he himself thought over life and the importance of human connection. He isn't completely against escapism but he shows that you can't always immerse yourself in it and expect to have your life set out. Meanwhile Shinji's character is used by others throughout the series to in order to improve their own mental health, leaving Shinji to get worse. I truly think that this series is a great depiction of the emotions felt while dealing with this depression, and the End of Evangelion does amazing to explain Shinji's psyche and the pain he has gone through

That's the exact reason why I don't recommend Eva to everyone although it's my favorite anime of all time. It's extremely personal and some people tend not to be able to feel connected to the characters, story and themes, so they end up saying it sucks and attacking aspects of the series that are almost objectively great (direction, character development, etc.). I like that you are still able to appreciate how well made Eva is and I completely understand why you didn't enjoy it as much as I did, so thanks for making this video!

Watching evangelion is like watching somebody get disemboweled.. You would never recommend it to somebody else, but those of us that have seen it know exactly how everyone else felt and have it indelibly etched into our memory

The thing with Shinji is that everytime he wins or changes a little bit, he looses like really really badly. So he devolves back into a depressed little shit not wanting to do or try anymore which is relatable Espically for a 14 year old. Ultimately leading to his choice to turn humanity into Fanta in the End of Evangelion. Which after that deep ass monologue he realizes that he has to accept himself and the world, therefore changing it so people have a choice to stay like that or turn back into humans.

And yes, Misato is best girl. You're a man of culture.

It’s sort of crazy that Eva got as big as it has, because at its core, it’s a very niche and artsy series that I’d say only half of its viewers with “get”, and only a portion of its viewers will truly resonate with.

I read a comment on another YouTube video that said something like “the amount of enjoyment you get out of Evangelion is inversely proportional to how much you love yourself”, and I think that’s an amazing way of putting it, despite being a joke.

And I think that puts a lot of people off. On the surface it’s another mecha anime, and combined with its popularity, it tends to drag in a lot of casual anime/tv watchers who won’t resonate with the shows themes.

Somehow I managed to run into it without knowing much about it (other than it has a weird ending), and it just so happened to click with me on a very VERY personal level. But I feel like that’s sort of one in a million, which is why I think it’s an anomaly that Eva got so popular. Especially since the show itself does have a ton of flaws that will absolutely ruin the experience for anyone who doesn’t spend their free time staring at ceilings and wanting to die.

I get you bro. Evangelion is one of my favorite anime’s but I will never say it’s for everyone. It’s a very slow show and is difficult to follow. I don’t think anyone is less than for not liking it. I just think the themes of acceptance and trauma in Evangelion really helped me through a tough period in my life. I feel like Shinji Ikari for example was the image of what I didn’t want to become. It taught me that I need to confront my issues no run from them. It’s not a perfect anime from an objective standpoint but in my eyes it’s a masterpiece.
