Comparison of all the elevator scenes

I added the Rebuild version to show how much was changed to show that something had changed in this timeline.

Something fun I discovered this week as I have rarely rewatched Death & Rebirth is that they added Asukas little sneeze, shrug or whatever it is first in Death & Rebirth, which also had some of the updated art used in the 2003 DVD Release NOT the 1996 art.

1996: First art style, no sneeze
Death & Rebirth: Second art style, sneeze
2003: Second art style, no sneeze
Rebuild: Third art style, sneeze

Seems strange they removed the sneeze from the DVD version as they had animated it years before.

When i first watched this, the elevator scene actually made me think that my tv froze.

The way Rei's line in the originals matches up with her stopping Asuka from slapping her in the Rebuild is unintentionally really good.

The original dub actress of Asuka is amazing, a lot of emotion and range. You could hear her bratty tone and her growing defensiveness and inferiority complex, it was all so clear in her tone and it all sounded so real and genuine. Also she genuinely sounded like she was about to cry out of frustration like a girl her age would.

"She doesn't even realise that she likes him!" contrasted with the meaningful silence after "I hate you! I hate everyone!" really is the heart of the difference between these characters.

The original shot had a purpose. It was about the rising tension in the air. It was a classic.

The long silence was perfect. It makes you anxious and scare of what it hides behind, which is Asuka's wrath.

Ok the rebuild has good animation, but the first two were phenomenal. Honestly I could feel the emotion and tension rising in the first two elevator scene. The rebuild on the other hand felt much more longer and more dull.

I never saw rebuild but Jesus Christ it makes the original seem WAY longer than when I first saw it.

I definitely prefer the originals. The long elevator scene no doubt had purpose.

Its moments like rei stopping Asuka from slapping her that made me really hope that fan theory about time travel with the rebuild series had been real

The way the old versions and the rebuild one interact from 0:56 make me think this is not meant as a new imagening of the old scene but directly interacting with it.

Which fits right into all the other hints in rebuild that Eva takes place in kind of a cyclic/looping timeline.

Eva fans: this scene is really impactful, it completely changed my life for the better and I was able to truly understand myself because of it. Thank you, Hideaki Anno.
