10 GOOD REASONS TO EAT LESS MEAT

10 REASONS TO REDUCE MEAT CONSUMPTION
Try one vegan-vegetarian meal a day or a vegan day a week!
Next time when you’re about to eat meat, think twice.
Meat has a big impact on the environment and on your health.
Decrease water footprint
The agricultural sector uses 70% of the freshwater resources every year. About 250 trillion gallons of water are used just for farmed animals and irrigating feed crops every year.
Mitigate world hunger
By eating less meat, we’ll have to raise less animals and we could produce instead more food for humans all around the world. The energy used today to raise the animals we eat could be used in more efficient ways and could eventually produce enough food to feed billions of people.
Reduce animal cruelty
More than 60 billion animals are killed every year worldwide. Usually factory farmed animals are raised in tiny wire cages or windowless sheds and never see the sunlight until the day they’re brought to the slaughter.
Avoid some preservatives
Processed meats - such as salami, bacon, sausages, frankfurters, hamburgers – are preserved through smoking, canning, freezing, fermentation and by using salt and preservatives like sodium acetates, nitrites, nitrates, sorbates and sulphites. Nitrates and nitrites are classified as probably carcinogenic by the IARC.
Sodium acetates are also used in the petroleum and plastic production. Some studies found that potassium sorbate could cause damage in DNA but further studies are required.
Decrease air pollution
Livestock causes about 9% of total anthropogenic carbon dioxide emissions, 37% of methane and 65% of nitrous oxide emissions.
Protect biodiversity
Meat production causes deforestations, intense land use, toxicity and habitat pollution and leads to
global biodiversity loss.
Healthier gut bacteria
Eating too much meat can alter your gut bacteria and this may lead to higher risk of “bad” cholesterol, heart disease, and colon inflammation. Less meat and more vegetables help grow a healthier gut bacteria and this means a more resistant immune system, less toxins and a better metabolism.
Avoid antibiotic resistant bacteria
Some animals are given antibiotics even if they’re not ill and bacteria living in those animals can become antibiotic resistant. If those bacteria get in the human body and cause an illness, people may not respond to antibiotic treatments.
Reduce cancer risk
Processed meat was classified as Group 1 carcinogenic to humans (smoking is also Group 1) and red meat was classified as Group 2A, probably carcinogenic to humans.
That means by eating 50 grams of processed meat every day (almost one and a half hot dog) your risk of colorectal cancer is 18% higher. By eating red meat on a regular basis, you have a greater chance of developing colorectal, pancreatic, and prostate cancer.
Overall health and environmental impact
By adopting a balanced diet, rich in plant-based foods, you can improve your overall health and prevent anti-aging: better skin, less body fat, les inflammations, lower body pressure. Studies have also shown that “meat lovers” have a higher carbon footprint while vegans and vegetarians cause almost half of the carbon emissions.
