How To Deal with High Balls in Tennis - 6 Ways
We've all played those opponents that hit high balls to us constantly.
If you don't know how to deal with high balls in tennis, it can become a real nightmare.

In this lesson, Coach Simon Konov of Top Tennis Training will show you six different ways that you can handle and deal with high balls in tennis.

Method One:
Move back and let the ball drop. This is the safest option, but also the most defensive.

Method Two:
Take the ball on the rise. This means you hit the ball before it gets too high. Great timing is required to pull off this option.

Method Three:
Slice the ball. This is a great way to change up the dynamics of the point and throw off your opponent's timing.

Method Four:
Hit the ball as a half volley. This means you're hitting the ball just after the bounce. This option requires perfect timing and you'll probably want to shorten your swings.

Method Five:
Hit a drive volley. This means you hit the ball before it bounces, but instead of hitting a normal volley, you hit a drive or swinging volley.

Method Six:
Hit the ball at the apex. This means you're hitting the ball at the highest spot, in that dead zone, where the ball is not rising or dropping.

Method Seven (bonus)
Hit an inside-in or inside-out forehand.

Video Timeline:

What is your go-to option for dealing with high balls?

My go-to option is usually hitting the ball into the net. Thanks Simon!

My go-to option is the slice on the forehand; in the backhand, I accept my fate and lose the point.

I love drive volley option although it's the hardest. When you manage to hit a winner from the first time your opponent hits a short high ball it's like a slap in the face and messes their tactic because they don't try it so many times any more.

Thank you for a great video 🙏🏻

Great video.

I am often suffering from a high ball in the one handed back-hand when I am trying to slice it at the apex.

Harder for me than the flat shot or even a topspin.

A detailed video about this will be welcome.

Really excellent! I especially like to half volley the high ball to take time away from pushers. I can see using the variety you show to disrupt their rythym. Great instruction! Thank you Simon!😊

Awesome Simon great analysis on how to handle high balls! At my club any high moon ball with top spin is an almost certain as not much space behind the baseline to run back!

There is another option on high bouncing balls: smashing them from behind the base line, like a serve with or without slice effect, and with more or less power according to the risk that you want to take 😊 tx a lot for the video

Having a one handed backhand, one thing I found very easy to do to deal with those high balls on backhand side is to let it bounce and to hit it high above head level in a kind of slice fashion with racket head almost facing court. This gives a slow sliced return but I found it incredibly easy to hit as a backup shot when you're a beginner

My favorite is in apex, and turn around my backhand. In the case i don’t have the timing to do it, i do the same moonball and wait for the next one.
Slicing is good too as you say to change the rhythm.
For me the hardest moonball to deal are the ones really high without any consistency, but i will try as you say to get it sooner right after the bounce to see if i can get more confortable and avoid direct faults.

Greetings. Dear Simon, I follow you and thank you for the educational clips. In my opinion, the forehand or the backhand that is hit immediately after the jump is called off the bounce or off the bounce, not Half Volley. Because Half Volley grip is different, this hit should be distinguished. With special thanks❤

Nicely done. What ball machine (make/model) are you using? It looks like a very good one. Thank you.
