Thanks again. I think you’re one of the best tennis coaches on YouTube. Really appreciate what you’re doing here. Glad you left “essential”.

Super helpful, high balls are so tough for me to handle. Can you also do a video on handling high backhands?

Another entertaining intro. I generally don't move back unless I am just warming up and not that focused. If I'm playing points or a match, I will not move back. My philosophy is that I can pressure my opponent most of times with heavy shots that they can't send the ball back deep on me with much pace. The few times this fails, I can live with. Tennis is a game of risk and reward. As you say, the short hop is the most difficult ball to play at the baseline. Generally, I can get put topspin on it and get it back deep enough to neutralize the shot. If the ball is close to my body, I like to buggy whip that ball and it's pretty consistent. The further away the ball is from my body, the more dicey the response is. But again, risk vs. reward. Taking a high ball on the rise is also problematic. When the ball is a rally ball, then this is not a problem. I usually can hit this ball hard with a flat shot. When the ball is heavy and high, then its very hard to control and sometimes i will slice it down the line hard instead of powering it back. It all depends on my confidence level at the time. Excellent video.

Many years ago I was trying hard to take the balls early against a guy who played high balls. I was losing, until I decided to go back and just give the balls back, also with a lot of spin. From this moment on it was an easy game, I didn’t lose any game anymore, as my opponent didn’t know how to deal with those high balls. This was an important experience for me.

Excellent! I realise now that I use the hop-step also when I'm taking the ball on the rise at shoulder level and that muddles up my timing. Gonna practice early prep and regular foot-work/open stance instead!

Actually I am guilty of being unable to go back. That's literally all my coaches say to me. One of them even calls me "a study case" cause I'm so used of hitting the ball very high 😅 I'm trying so hard to fix it but it seems quite hopeless 😂

Do you offer in-person lessons? If so, what airport is closest to you and what city/town do you teach? What is the hourly charge for a lesson?

Hitting high balls further in front can work sometimes kind of catch the ball out in front of your face, it will have some side spin but that is normal.

OK in my surrounding area we have this player (he is well known and hated for his style) who hits tons of balls seriously 20-30 meters over the net on purpose. They all fall in deep near the baseline and you have to take them on the hop or fast when it bounces up...if you let it go you'll be climbing in the fence every time. And it doesn't matter if you take the first few good and win the first set, he won't change his style and will wreck you mentally and he can keep it up all day!
