Appendix is a muscular tubular structure arising from cecum.
Its lies in the posteromedial aspect of caecum with retrocecal position being the most common position of tip of appendix.
Appendicitis is common in childhood and early adults.
Symptoms of appendicitis can be remembered with Murphy's triad : sequence of abdominal pain, vomiting and temperature (meaning fever).
Appendix pain is poorly localised, periumbilical pain that migrates to right lower abdomen after 6 hours.
Appendix pain can be just right lower abdominal pain or vague abdominal pain.
Vomiting and fever occurs but never high grade fever.
Diagnosis is done by using various scoring systems. Most common one is Alvarado scoring.
Treatment is appendectomy. However, new researches have mentioned that uncomplicated appendicitis can be managed conservatively.
