Knee swelling, often called water on the knee, can be chronic and debilitating. It can lead to a loss of motion in the knee and the ability to walk or stand too!

Sometimes doctors offer to drain the fluid in the knee to reduce the swelling. This can help with tolerating more standing, walking and can instantly increase mobility as well.

But is this a good thing to do?
Should you get your knee drained to help with knee pain?
What if that fluid is supposed to be there for a specific reason?
Why does the fluid build up again?

100 percent. I once had 15 cc removed from my left knee. The relief was huge. Now I wear compression sleeves to keep the fluid from building up.

Great video/explanation. Age 51, Had 90 cc removed yesterday. Feels so much better today, hope swelling doesn't come back. I had been overdoing with walking/moving 10 hours a day for a week, guess my knee was saying that's if enough old timer.

Thank you, thank you, thank you for your videos. I wish I watched them a few weeks ago when I had to go to the ER when my knee swelled up the size of a grapefruit. Oh the pain. I’m so glad that I found these videos and I do plan to share them on my health page.

My MRI has shown mild effusion in the knee.
Now I know I should not be worrying about it too much.

Watching this cause i’m experiencing this water on the knee thing for the first time on my left knee. I didn’t do anything for it to swell and i’m pretty sure its related to overuse/kneeling too much. Im only 19 so who knows. My knee feels decent and i can even stand on just my left leg with no pain. Hoping time and patience with rest will let it heal. Don’t got money to get it looked at so pretty much praying for the best lol

Had my knee drained before seeing videos. The fluid and tinge of nerve twangs is already coming back after only 5 days. Just like you said, the ortho told me ok to do my walks - no worry!! But after listening to you I hear I must take it easy, get the MRI. Will ice help with the fluid until I figure out my plan?? Thanks so much!!

Thank you so much for taking time to explain everything, But when you say muscle imbalance what exactly is that?

In my case the swelling was the actual problem because it was hematomas that developed after a car accident where my knees slammed into the dash. It looked like someone had stuck half a softball under the skin on both knees. After 8 weeks I could still barely walk. I read about draining, but the orthopedist refused stating that was not the standard procedure. Clearly my hematomas were also not the standard. It’s unusual for knee hematomas to be that large. I ended up doing it myself. Not only did I have almost instant relief with no recurrence, but there was white fluid indicating an infection the orthopedist had missed.

I have only mild fluid in my knees as shown in my MRI report. Should I still drain it? Or only take medicines? When can I start exercising and go back to normal life? I am a dancer and feeling very restricted 😒
Please help

Hi doc, i am 31 year old and got my left knee drained, for testing. I can still feel a bit of swelling in my knee. There is no wear and tear in my bones ligaments cartilages or muscles. How should i solve the muscle imbalance issues adressed in this video?

Okay I thought I would hold off on commenting until I was sure. So my knee was really swollen around the kneecap. From January 25th to February 25th. On the 25th it look like it was starting to go down. It's been going down every day since the 25th of February day and night. I'd say it's probably about 70% down now. Been doing the tailgate kicks. Probably two weeks after My knee got inflamed. This is the third time it's happened each time it happens it's normally about a year and a couple months in between. The first time it took one month for it to go down. The second time it took two weeks. This time it took one month.
