Physical Therapy Post Knee Replacement
Rehabilitation is a key part of recovery after knee replacement. You will undergo daily physical therapy to help keep your knee as mobile as possible. This therapy may include using a continuous passive motion machine, which keeps the knee moving slowly. This helps prevent the formation of stiffness and scar tissue. Rehabilitation can take several months, but the sooner you start to see improvements, the better.
Your physical therapist will work with your surgeon to develop a custom treatment plan based on your specific needs. The goal of therapy is to regain your range of motion, strengthen your muscles, and improve balance. Your physical therapist will also help you overcome your anxiety and stress after surgery. Your therapist will make sure you do not hurt yourself and will motivate you to keep doing physical therapy.
Physical therapy is an essential part of recovery after knee replacement. Most people will be able to return to normal activities several months after the surgery. However, some people will be unable to resume strenuous activities, which is why it is important to follow your doctor's instructions for physical therapy. Besides strengthening your muscles, physical therapy will make sure that your new knee is properly aligned. In addition, physical therapy will provide you with tips to avoid injury to your new knee.

I had total knee replacement--left knee--on 2/21/23. Ice, physical therapy and more ice😁 I was back with my trainer on 4/24/22.

I had my knee done 2017 at age 58, the BEST thing is to use a power cryotherapy machine, not an ice pack. I’m a retired RN. keep the ice machine ON ! Power cryotherapy machines are about $160, however they should be covered by insurance as durable medical equipment. They far our perform an ice pack and you’ll thank me……Ten minutes with an ice pack doesn’t cut it, as soon as its off,
Throbbing stabbing Pain returns. Also, take your pain meds 1/2 hour before physical therapy……you’ll need it, especially when they push your heel towards your bottom on the table.

I just had a total knee replacement this past Halloween. Leg still hurts but I'm making strides! BUT I'm a REALLY BAD PATIENT! I completely agree with 2 of the 3 points made. They're all VERY IMPORTANT. Only thing is I HATE cold on any single part of my scrawny body! 😂 I'll pass on that but I'll do the other two.

My leg gets tired and somewhat numb by using the pillow under the heel, so I use a king sized pillow and I place my leg on it for elevation, sometimes 2 pillows.

What about using an ice machine? I know someone that used it 24/7 the first couple weeks

I’ve had knee cap surgery on both knees, my experience was the sooner you start stretching and exercising the better, the stretching WILL hurt but it will loosen up the joint and then the knee will feel better for it, the exercises are hard to do at first but keep doing them and they will get easier

I had mine 3 days ago and ice hurts so much when I put it on it. And I think with my fibromyalgia I have been having muscle spasms. They don't feel good. I am having PT already and hurt so bad afterwards to the point I cry. I'm hoping this starts going easier

My grandma had both her knees replaced twice. It was not successful. She had P.T. The rest of her life. Now I’m in my 30’s with knee pain, wish she had more options and opinions when she was alive. Will be trying as many tips and tricks I can find to avoid surgery as much as possible. I heard surgery lasts for 5 years max for people who work in a labor type field(which I do) so can’t be done in five years.

When I sleep with a pillow or blanket under just my ankle I seem to have more pain in and around the knee not have been able to bend my knee for years and now the pressure of gravity will be the death of me.😅 I am having pain that shifts from 2 inches below the knee straight down to top of my ankle then it will be outside of knee down the side to back of calf.. then at times it can hurt EVERY WHERE AT ONCE... 😅😅 I am not an old patient but I did wait a very long time before having this done. My other knee is bad and not sure at this point I can say it will have it done or not... 😢😢😢

Recurculating ice wrap was my best friend after both ACL surgeries. Looks like an ice chest that you fill with ice and cold water. It has 2 tubes connected to the pad, which continuously circulates cold, so you can ice much longer. ❤ They always say 20min on 20mins off. 10min isn't enough time.
😢 I can't sleep with my legs straight. If I accidentally shift to my back during the night, my knees 🔐 up and causes excruciating pain.

I need a total, double knee replacement. I have contactor capsules on both. Can I do anything before surgery? No I am not able to straighten either from damage and bone spurs. Oh, I'm 43. On a walker.

I had a knee surgery two years ago. But I still have some issues on performing exercises like pistol squads. Would physical therapy be beneficial for strenghtening the knee?
