3 Home Defense Shotguns Worth Buying

Are you thinking about buying a shotgun to defend your home? There are a lot of options to consider before making your purchase. In this short gun review video, U.S. Concealed Carry Association Director of Content Kevin Michalowski demonstrates 3 home defense shotguns worth buying in 2022. These are different defensive shotguns all based on the Mossberg Model 500 12-gauge, pump-action action.

00:00 Kevin’s eyes light up when he talks about shotguns. In this case he is demonstrating three different incarnations of the Mossberg 500 pump shotgun.
00:52 How you choose to customize your shotgun is a matter of personal preference.
01:10 The stubby little Mossberg Shockwave may appear to be a sawed-off shotgun, but it is fully legal under ATF standards and requires no special permit to own.
01:48 The “standard” Mossberg 500 is a versatile and reliable home-defense shotgun which can also be used to hunt deer.
02:45 The Mossberg 500 can be customized with a wide variety of stocks, grips, accessory rails and aftermarket sights.
03:51 The differences between these three shotguns is largely cosmetic. Each feeds, handles and fires the same way and uses the same ammunition.
04:30 When firing a shotgun, you still need to aim in order to lay down accurate shot placement. The shot does not spread as wide as Hollywood would have you believe, especially at home-defense distances.
05:04 Most defensive or hunting shotguns have very limited ammo capacities. Five, six or eight rounds of ammo are most common, depending on the model of shotgun and the length of the magazine tube. If you are going to use a shotgun for self-defense, make sure to practice tactical reloads.
05:29 Do not rely on the distinctive sound of racking the pump on a shotgun to scare off a burglar. Know what your weapon is capable of and be ready to actually fire it if forced to do so.

I bought my Mossy 500 18" "cruiser" in 1973. I have shot 1000's of rounds through it... trap, skeet, slugs, all of the bucks, cut shells, wax shells. I will always grab it first, just because I can cycle it fast, load it or top it off fast, and hit what I want to hit. There is just nothing like familiarity.

I’ve had mine since 1971. My father bought two for us to bird hunt with. Later added folding stock and 18” barrel. Been extremely reliable hunting, target practice, clay pigeons and handy for home defense. Only used once for home defense and racking the action sent 4 teenagers running back out the door they had just booted in quicker than I think they had ever run before! 😳 luckily no shots were required!

Early '90's vintage Remington 870P's....back when craftmanship was still a thing. You can still occasionally find 870P LE trade-ins but they are few and far between. Thank you Kevin for all you do....greatly appreciated.

i have a 590 shockwave you might get a small spread pattern with bird shot but the big boom will certainly be a game changer.

Yes I love the shockwave pistol. If you put a laser on it, you can accurately hipfire it.

Benelli M4, I have 2 H20’s both modified to 922r limits and have useful mods like oversized charging handles, modified loading ports, followers, breaching muzzle brakes, sling mounts, side saddle and a +1.. red dot on one, thermal on the other… they have been stone reliable and they get worked heavily at the Sig Academy classes.. the baby is a Saiga 20 I SBS converted with a collapsible stock, laser and light.. it needs fiddling to run anything but heavy loads well, but it is simple enough.

Kevin, what are your thoughts on the mini shells? I have those loaded in my shockwave, and I have the aftermarket block installed for those shells. Just wanted your opinion. TIA

For home defense i have a couple of 12 gauge bullpups. Semi auto, takes ten round mags and twenty round drums, can shoulder/aim fire and isnt much longer than a shockwave.
