Cars are getting ever more complex, but that means there's more to go wrong, doesn’t it? Well, according to our Driver Power ownership satisfaction survey, it’s not the case, with complex SUVs, hybrids and tech-laden models all topping the charts when it comes to dependability.

This list has been produced using feedback from tens of thousands of car owners across the UK, and covers cars up to 12 months old.

It confirms the perceptions of some manufacturers. Four out of 10 most reliable new cars are from Toyota or Lexus. The Volkswagen Group, which includes Skoda, Audi and SEAT, took a further 30% of the top 10.

Follow us:

Carbuyer makes car buying simple. We're the only automotive brand that's approved by the Plain English Campaign, delivering you clear, concise and easy to understand information about the things that really matter when you're choosing - and buying - your next car.

Every week, Carbuyer's YouTube channel brings you simple and entertaining reviews on every major make and model that's available for sale in the UK. Plus you'll find frequently-updated top 10 features and the occasional group test for good measure.

Endless list of VAG cars and not one Honda. Doesn't seem very credible to me.

Audi and Seat are reliable for now. When they're 5+ years old they'll start falling apart. The Lexus' will continue for at least another 15.

Except for the RAV4, what the hell does the Top3 have to do with reliable cars? You'll never going to buy a 10 year old Audi or Skoda and expect it to be reliable. Because they won't be.

Any "best" or "most reliable" cars list should be based on or, at the very least, include the views and opinions of motor mechanics. These people are the ones who can tell the "real" stories behind every make and model. The resulting lists would probably not contain many, if any, VAG or other "German" brands and they would certainly not occupy any of the top 5 positions. Nowadays most people would acknowledge that Japanese and, more recently, Korean cars are extremely reliable. But our European, and American, obsession with brand snobbery and ridiculous perception of certain German brands as being "premium brands" has meant that despite their mechanical mediocrity and, in some cases, blatant dishonesty (emissions scandal!), they continue to thrive. Fortunately we all have the freedom of choice and also the power to change the motoring landscape. We can vote with our feet by not walking into certain car showrooms and handing over our hard-earned cash. Happy motoring!!!😊

Finally a somewhat trustworthy list of reliable cars from this channel. No surprise there was three Lexus models and one Toyota in the list. Thats reliability right there! :-)

Moving to the UK this month and have to buy a vehicle but what's the most reliable for the money you'll spend?

I haven't actually noticed the Audi Q3. But the Q5 & Q7 are among the worst cars when it comes to reliability. Small Audis are usually a lot better than fullsize Audis in this aspect. So maybe the Q3 is a dependable car. But I must say it seems strange to see an Audi SUV on this list.

If I could afford it I'd get the Lexus RX 450H... I'd have to buy a 2015 in like 2020

You mean most reliable SUV? Not a single small car and 8/10 were SUV or large saloons...

I think you guys should do car brands, not the cars themselves. I mean there are only 5 brands here ( I count lexus and toyota as one, and same goes for VW group vehicles )

Customer based surveys on reliability are ironically unreliable, people who take pride in the car they own will defend it to the world's end and skew the results to make it seem like it's wonderful: Toyota drivers, audi drivers, bmw drivers, mercedes drivers

I have a golf gt mk 5, I’ve owned the car for a year it’s cost me a fortune getting the timing chain fixed. It’s been at the garage every month since I bought it.
Audi’s are not very reliable as a whole but the Q3 has scored highly for reliability by far Audi’s most reliable model.
I’ve owned a Audi A3 and had no problems I’ve owned 2 golds and had nothing but hassle.
