ADHD Behaviors you didn’t know about part 3

Can you relate? 💙💡- part 3

Instead of carelessly throwing away old things that you don’t need anymore, you’re actually a lot more likely to keep old items that accompanied you throughout important events in your life, not because you may want to sell them or give them away, but so your brain doesn’t forget the memories associated with them. This is why our houses are usually full of hoarded stuff people tell us we don’t need and unfortunately we usually forget where we placed our items, which can lead to a bit of frustration.

Yep, I put my stuff in a safe place then forget where that safe place was

The worst part of adhd is the constant memory loss. It does feel like my life is slipping away and so I resort to hoarding but my family members used to throw things out behind my back which resorted to increased anxiety over losing things.

I either hoard or throw away everything and anything... it's quite hard because either I'm overwhelmed by clutter or I miss things I've thrown away

Bro I didn't need to be called out like this during my early breakfast

This is why it’s so hard for me to throw away old journals, or old essays I wrote when I was in like 4th or 5th grade. I feel less bad now for still keeping them.

As a person with ADHD I can confirm, we get nostalgia for everyday objects.

This happens all the time. I was once searching frantically for something and said “I put it somewhere where I wouldn’t lose it, so of course I lost it.” And my dad who also has ADHD replied with “No, you didn’t lose it. You put it somewhere where you wouldn’t. You just can’t remember where that is.” Not sure if it’s frustrating or wise but it sure made me laugh.

I learned a way where I'm comfortable enough to throw away things I don't need but keep the memory.
I take a bunch of photos. The memory will still return when looking at the photos, plus I have less clutter at home.

This is so true! My ASD & ADHD teen daughter is quite the collector. We don’t have a large home & it’s a nightmare trying to organise all the “stuff.” I know the memories are important to her, so I can’t just cull the backlog. It drives me nuts but I can’t hurt her & just get rid of it. Truly loving someone, sometimes, means enduring the uncomfortable.

Not me crying because I hate how much clutter I have but really struggling to get rid of things and not knowing why .

For me, I'm never sure that my decision to get rid of the item is a good decision or just an impulsive decision that I'll regret later.

I managed to break through this. Very liberating

It doesn't matter if I haven't seen said item in 6 years, when I learn it was actually thrown out 4 years ago I still cry

"so we don't forget the memory associated with that object" I've used those exact words to describe it for years. Didn't know i had adhd till very recently

I love the idea that Marie Kondo uses: take a picture of the item and put it in an album. That way you can still see it but it doesn't take up that much space :)

ADHD life hack: take pictures of these items from at least three different angles and then keep those pictures on at least two different cloud storage accounts. Then keep those items together in an opaque garbage bag or box and store it away in a specific spot. Write today’s date one year in the future on the box. If you ever come across that box and it’s past the date written and you’ve never opened the box to use any of the items inside you are safe to throw the box away. Your memories are safe on cloud storage and the boxes serve no practical purpose.

And then, after, let's say, 3 years you suddenly remember about that little thing and look for it for hours cause YOU HAVE TO FIND IT

My mom threw away important things as a kid because she saw it as "messy". I get super attatched to everything now. Get called a hoarder.
