Can you relate? - part 11 💡

ADHD Behaviours You Didn’t Know About, part 11

Rather than avoiding competitive situations with others, you often try to create them out of thin air, not because you like conflict, but because competition motivates your brain to actually start a task since all of a sudden, **it’s no longer about just starting but winning**, effectively beating your task initiation problem. However, because your brain is difficult to satisfy and needs to constantly chase the next thing, you usually won’t spend long celebrating your victories.

So hard to find excitement in accomplishments. I’m on to the next thing.

I actually am the complete opposite. I have ADHD with debilitating social anxiety, any form of competition sets off my anxiety and so I never doing anything with that.
I used to love sports but I don’t like the win-lose part, I just wanted to play it for fun.

I also don’t like competition at all, because it’s a demand and a limitation on my autonomy. But I think this is a great conversation to have among ND folks! This is a good reminder to me that friends/peers who are always trying to “one-up” others might not be aiming to assert superiority, but just to get a task done.

I cry watching these videos, because I'm coming to the realization that I have ADHD I'm 41 yrs old and lived my life just doing things and not really understanding why. Every single video is ME! 😢

This is the first time I haven’t identified with one of your videos. I’m the complete opposite to this. I hate competition!!!

This hits I worked hard to become a world champion power lifter in my 50s within minutes of receiving multiple gold medals on that platform. The thrill was gone.

I do this sometimes by working my ass off to do a better job than a coworker who has rubbed me the wrong way for some reason. I tell myself I have to PROVE that I am just as good as or better than them and this motivates me like nothing else.

At this point ADD for me is a superpower. Sure I don't have a lot of intimate relationships but I am career focused so I do not notice being alone much because I am surrounded by the same people. Also, I do not get lonely when I am alone I get alot more stuff done. I can hyper-focus in the realm of months to years at a time in things I care about doing or are valuable to me. I have struggled in school but that taught me I am an original thinker who can quickly relate abstract ideas. I am also very competitive but not confrontational. And like this video I do not celebrate my wins I try to remain humble and I celebrate by comparing myself to where I was before I began my journey which might be something as small as buying an iced coffee and reminiscing back when I could barely afford to eat. When you begin to work with ADD you begin to realize some of the greatest foundational strengths of it are eerily reminiscent of great people before you.

This is why I love competitive videogames and I grind for hours without being able to stop. My brain is stupid sometimes

You just blown me away with the last sentence because that's literally me with regards of not celebrating victories. That's is so true for me because the glory of achieving something usually last only a day and then it's gone haha

Exactly right. I’d even have competitions with myself if no-one else was around, beat my own record etc

I’ve noticed that if a task is too challenging, it doesn’t feel like a victory when I complete it, I just wanna shove it away and never think about it again..
