ADHD Behaviors you didn’t know about - part 5

Instead of maintaining perfect eye contact AND listen to what someone is saying, you will often only be able to do 1, instead of both, not just because it’s difficult for you to pay attention but because your brain cannot focus on 2 things simultaneously and switch between tasks ask quickly. This is why, when you’re meeting someone, focus on giving perfect eye contact and they tell you their name, the chance of you remembering are close to 0, which is also why, whenever you’re talking, you generally like to stare off into space to deliver your points.

The eye contact thing is so real. I often find myself focusing on looking like I'm paying attention rather than actually paying attention. Unfortunately I don't look like I'm paying attention when I am, and it frustrates other people sometimes.

Thank you for clarifying this. It has brought me a great deal of shame throughout my life and I’m happy to hear is not just me!

Speech and language therapist here (and ADHD myself)- I love this explanation (and your entire channel) and will definitely use this when parents tell me they want me to “work on their child’s eye contact” which they do a LOT.

I find eye contact uncomfortable but try to maintain it during a convo because people make such a big deal about it. But when I come across somebody that doesn’t do the eye contact thing while talking, I feel so much more relaxed.

You also fear the other person will think you are lying because you look away when speaking. Lots of people will look off to the side when lying.

I have been diagnosed with ADHD as an adult. It took 36 years for me to be diagnosed. But I always knew I was different. I have also been diagnosed with depression, anxiety, and PTSD. On top of that, I am dyslexic. Your videos make perfect sense. Short sweet and to the point. Just enough for me to concentrate and hear you.

....I should see a doctor. This might be one of my major flags.
As a child, my mom would snap at me furiously when I didn't maintain strict eye contact. And when I was completely overwhelmed at my coffee shop job, I could not look customers in the eye and sometimes when I would talk to them I would lock on to the corner behind them, and they would turn around to see what I was "looking at". Lol, that last one always made me feel so embarrassed in the moment 🥴

Makes sense now, I get so hyper focused on paying attention that I totally don’t recall anything that the person tells me. I’ve wondered why I’ve always done this, I got diagnosed back when I was a kid. Of course when I was diagnosed it was back in the early 90s and there wasn’t a lot of information on it like there is now. Thank you for spreading this information, because of channels like this one I have been able to answer questions about my own mental sanity that I’ve had for over 25 years.

Thank you for sharing this! I have NEVER been able to establish or maintain eye contact with anyone. It almost never occurs to me to attempt it, and I never understood why it's seemingly so natural for people to do it. Again, thank you.

Eye contact has always been a difficult thing for me it makes me uncomfortable in some situations because it just feels wrong unless it’s like my wife or something but even then I feel more comfortable when I don’t have to look directly at someone.

Ive learned to lean my ear towards someone and tap it so they know i am listening even though im not looking at them. Also, ive found, when trying to recite things in chronological order without stutting or getting off topic, i clise my eyes to shut off distracting stimuli and take a slow deep breath in... And out... In... Then slowly, metering my words with my eyes still closed. I also teach my coworkers, family and friends how i am wired differently so they give me a chance to use my copes to communicate better, and they recognize when I am unable to, which gives them a chance to bring my attention back to where it needs to be so they can effectively communicate with me. I also close my eyes when i am doing something that requires fine motor skills, like getting that nut underneath that thing like working on an engine or screwing the light cover on the ceiling and cant seem to line it up. When I close my eyes and focus on the 'feel' of it. And I sit make sure i set down extra items, and sit down to do a lot of complex things. Balance takes a lot of focus. Sitting takes the extra attention used to stand out of the equation. All these things help me anyways

I am 51 and recently diagnosed with ADHD. Finding out that this is an ADHD “trait” is wild because I have a habit of closing my eyes, bending my head and leaning in towards people that are talking to me. When I used to be questioned about it I said that it helps me concentrate/focus on what is being said

I love staring into space when talking. It’s so weird.

I’m glad someone who actually has and understands adhd is finally reaching people about it online with things that are TRUE! It’s unbelievable how many fake news channels there are out there

Yeah sometimes if I catch myself looking at someone I have to look away or else I’ll distract myself
