I've always appreciated the message of this movie: that we are, all of us, living in Jodie Foster's eyeball.

The most memorable epic opening to a movie….I remember being in the cinema and there was complete silence…..I don’t think I’ve ever sat through the start of a movie with my jaw on the floor…I was totally consumed by the experience of this opening……oh and the movie itself….a masterpiece….up there as one of my favourite movies of all time….heartfelt and sincere sci fi at its best…

One of the best opening scenes from a movie, ever.

40 years ago, Carl Sagan was at a beach, scooped down to fill his hands with sand, and told millions of TV viewers (including me) that there were more stars in the universe than all the grains of sand in all the beaches of the Earth. My mind was absolutely blown, a hidden world was suddenly revealed to me. I was 7 years old when I saw that and I never forgot it. Thanks for the memories Dr Sagan. There's a reason why the end of this movie ends with simply one phrase: "For Carl"

Watched this recently, and it absolutely blew me away.

Initially, I was put off by the clash of music and the serenity of space. Then you get it, and it's special. This opening is one of the greatest of any film. How small we are.

Its already been 20 Years? Man, I can still remember the audiences reaction to this Opening Scene. It was so quiet, you could hear a pin drop.

This scene always actually cheers me up. All my problems, totally and utterly meaningless, a fragment of a speck of nothing.
It all means a lot more shortly after, but for a few moments you realise the truth.

The size of the universe makes everything you worry about on earth seem pointless doesn't it?

Although I count this opening sequence as one of my favorite sci-fi sequences of all time and think it does a great job of illustrating the idea of radio signals being older the further out you go out and does so with great effect, it is not fully accurate. The farthest planet Neptune (sorry Pluto) is approximately 30 AU or 4.15 Light Hours from the sun, which makes it aprox 29 AU from Earth, or 4 light hours. Therefore if you were standing on the surface of Neptune with a large antenna, you'd pick up radio signals that are about 4 hours old only, not decades old like it depicts on this sequence. Nitpicky details aside, the sequence does effectively portray this concept in a beautiful and meaningful way. One of my faves for sure.

This is one of those rare opening sequences that renders the audience completely transfixed and tranquil. People were talking at first but as the montage of planets flew by, it grew so quiet it was like a prayer in that movie theater. A wonderful shared experience from one of the greatest and most humbling opening sequences in cinema.

College neighbors had top of line TV and just got a new DVD player in late ‘97, they passed me the bong and said “Watch this!”
It’s still an amazing scene.

Easily one of the best movie opening scenes. I love thinking about how big the known universe is, and imagining the unknown.

That's a cool opening scene. I like how the radio transmissions are going further and further backward in time, that's a cool idea. I need to see this movie.

I'm SO glad that more people notice this reference in the episode 6 of Loki!

Not even our radio waves have traveled very far. Shows how insignificant everything that's ever happened on Earth, before and during human civilization, is in the grand scheme of things

when i went to the cinemas to watch this.. I did not expect that opening..

I sat there.. frozed.. eyes glued to the wonderful vision that played out before me..

I actually begged the Movies Theater to replay that scene over and over again.. lol

MIND BLOWING! That opening scene is simply mind blowing. We cannot even BEGIN to conceive how gigantic (even that is an understatement) this entire universe is. It is, actually, quite scary.

I saw this film 16 times not long after its release. I'm from Hollywood, California and was living in Beverly Hills. Let's just say I had special screening privileges. I love this film and my favorite scenes are the Opening and Dr. Arroway's journey through the Worm hole back to Pensacola odyssey...
