Let’s appreciate the fact that this came out in 1997....
Technically, visually, way ahead of its time....

I remember watching this in the theater, I didn't know what to expect at all. We smoked a joint, and went inside... and I recall watching this and forgetting to breathe for about 5-6 seconds, and gasping at one point. It was hypnotic and utterly unforgettable and when the movie ended, real life seemed like a dream. Of course, I was high, but the movie did something to my brain that no other movie has.

I remember watching this in the theater for the first time. People were intitially gabbing and chatting, but about 20 seconds in it became completely silent. It was like everyone was entranced into a meditation.

I like to think most people were processing the visuals and in awe of the sheer size of existence. How puny and insignificant we are. Completely humbling.

This scene is "awesome". It almost brings me to tears when I look at it and the insignificance of our lives. A tiny little planet in a sea of galaxies likely each with thousands or millions of earth-like planets. Overwhelming doesn't describe it. How can we possibly view the cosmos without acknowledging that we are not alone. We sit here and worry about our tiny little lives with all our tiny little concerns that really don't matter.

Simply incredible, unforgettable and maybe even inspirational.

I find this one of the most powerful introductions of any movie I've ever seen so far.

2:48, the part where every speck of light is a galaxy, there is not greater proof that we are not alone!!

A tiny rock
covered with chattering primates
who ponce around, believing they are in control of their lives and understand the world they live in.
(and in the moments I forget - I'm one of 'em, video is a nice quick reality check, and also a superb way to start an SF movie)

Just watched it again, a really absorbing film that brings a tear to the eye, Jodie Foster perfect as Ellie Arroway

This Intro seems like MIB Men In Black to me where the Universe is one Shiny Marble, a toy held in an Alien's hand tossed around like a ball ! 📍🔮🎲

The spatial scale isn't quite right and the time regression effect is WAY off, but I obviously know why they did it this way, and this will ALWAYS be my favorite movie intro of all time, in one of my top favorite movies of all time. It's hauntingly beautiful and hauntingly lonely at the same time. Any time I see or hear about yet another "Guess how big the universe is!" video, I instantly think of this and know it just won't feel the same. This is my perfect version of such, at least as perfect as it can be.

This is where the introduction scene of Loki's episode 6 came from.

I would have thought the 1969 Moon Landing signal would have made it way, waay, WAAAAY past Jupiter by 1997, when Contact was made... like 28 light-years out, maybe ?

Straight Dope sent me here.
Great intro, but the distances are off. Jupiter and Saturn (1:18) are only a few light-minutes from earth. Sirius and Alpha Centura (1:45) are about four light-years. But the Pillars of Creation (2:11) is about 7, 000 light years.

Notice "Boogie Oogie Oogie" played when we pass Mars? Probably one of the songs Mark Watney had to listen to. 😂
