Star Trek: First Contact is a 1996 American science fiction film directed by Jonathan Frakes (in his motion picture directorial debut) and based on the franchise Star Trek. It is the eighth film in the Star Trek film series, as well as the second to star the cast of Star Trek: The Next Generation. In the film, the crew of the USS Enterprise-E travel back in time from the 24th century to the mid-21st century in order to stop the cybernetic Borg from conquering Earth by changing their past.

Star Trek: First Contact was released on November 22, 1996, and was the highest-grossing film on its opening weekend. It eventually made $92 million in the United States and Canada with an additional $54 million in other territories, combining a worldwide total of $146 million. Critical reception was mostly positive; critics including Roger Ebert considered it to be one of the best Star Trek films, and it was the most positively reviewed film in the franchise (93% of reviews were positive) until being marginally surpassed (94%) by the 2009 reboot film. The Borg and the special effects were lauded, while characterization was less evenly received. Scholarly analysis of the film has focused on Captain Jean-Luc Picard's parallels to Herman Melville's Ahab and the nature of the Borg. First Contact was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Makeup and won three Saturn Awards.

Hollywood has truly forgotten the art and impact of opening credits.

I’ll never forget my experience seeing this in the theater when it first came out. The audience was so lively that they applauded every actors name. Never had an experience like that in the theater.

First contact was a lightning in a bottle. Tng was still fresh, ds9 was running successfully, voyager was kinda picking up, everyone was in their prime, star trek was alive and well.

One of the most passionate French horn solos I've ever heard. So pastoral, yet dominant.

Kudos to Terry Matalas for bringing this theme into the final season of Star Trek Picard.

Not many composers can bring one to tears within 30 seconds of their music starting. Jerry Goldsmith does it within 10. He left us way too soon.

I remember seeing this in the theater at midnight on opening night. Theater full of Trekkies. The energy in the audience was really something to remember.

I still think of this music when I look up through my telescope and dream of a better future. I'm in my 40's now and that one little bit hasn't changed since I started watching Star Trek: TNG all those years ago. I'm forever grateful for it.

A beautiful theme. My favourite Star Trek movie theme. Saw this movie way back in 1996. This theme still brings tears to my eyes.

My older brother took me to see this in the theater. I loved Star Trek, but didn’t watch The Next Generation, and I had no clue who or what the Borg was. They scared me poopless. Now years later this is my favorite Star Trek movie of all time.

I saw this on opening night in 1996. It was magic and everyone loved it. I even conned my schoolfriends in going to see it and they had to grudgingly admit that it was good.

Such an incredible opening. It has to be the most beautiful theme in all of Star Trek.
I still remember seeing this for the first time in the pictures, what an experience.

this is such a superb piece of music, Jerry got Star Trek and his music reflected that! One of the best Star Trek movies, hands down!

Saw this twice on opening day. Matinee by myself and then that night with friends. Great memories.
