This is a scene from the 1997 movie Contact. This is an extremely underrated sci-fi movie and is one of my personal favorites.

I love the way this entire scene is structured and if you like it, I'd encourage you to watch the film.

The gray haired guy calling out the percentages is Gerry Griffin: He was one of the handful of flight directors during the Apollo missions. Not an actor — the real McCoy.

"I’m OK to go!" For some reason, this phrase resonates very profoundly for me, brings tears to my eyes. Such a pragmatically poetic statement of self-determination & empowerment. ❤️

This is a great scene. The way that the alien technology begins to reveal itself as far superior to human technology...the sheer amount of power and energy that the machine generates...the breakdown in communication between Ellie and the control room. This is an underrated movie.

The courage that she shows, she wanted to make sure they heard, “OK to go”

I love the part where the rockets fire to push the last ring. This is the best science fiction movie I've ever seen in terms of story and writing and the visual effects are superior to most of the CGI I see today.

I know it's obvious, but the main issue with the contraption being the chair that humans added is just perfect.

i loved how they treated ken and how the actor played him (wonderful actor btw, can't remember his name offhand). they don't spell out that he's blind at all they just show you after a few minutes of him already being present and having a conversation.. when he goes to shake ellies hand and it's not in the right place it suddenly just clicks. (plus the way he was looking around which is really great acting) but they don't mention anything else about it.. they just show the evidence and continue with the story. that's a very graceful technique.. and it treats the audience more respectfully i think.

Some of Alan Silvestri’s best work in this film. Up there with The Abyss, Roger Rabbit, Back to the Future. What a score.

The look of relief and fear Matthew McConaughey shows when he hears she's alright, but still willing to go. UGH THIS MOVIE, MAN

An Einstein-Rosen bridge connects two distant points in space or time. You can spend hours somewhere else and return to Earth a second after the moment you left. Fascinating but messes with your head. The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe illustrated this exact same concept.

'a higher power intervened'. I just realised rewatching this that if he hadn't been there, they would have cancelled the launch.

This movie was better than Interstellar.

I like how the alien technology transfer to the private sector was shown with the VTOL (Vertical Takeoff and Landing) corporate jet. New alien designed materials made such a design viable in a short period of time.

We need a sequel or a mini series to this. Twister was recently lit, we need to see how some of the tech was used and who else went through the machine after.
