I love how Thomas puts these high carb videos up on the weekend when he knows we’ve cheated 😝

Joining the chorus of “what was I thinking”? weekend backsliding keto nerds. Cake is never a problem for me as I’m celiac but The ice cream got to me this time. Thanks for the guidance. Really helps regain control.

If you are eating mostly fat for your meals over time you deplete your glycogen stores especially if you do moderate exercise. If your blood glucose really spikes above 140 its likely because your glycogen stores are full and so the glucose has no where to go immediately. I think this is what people see who dont eat a lot of carbs and get a spike from carbs.

I know that if i eat a piece of fruit for example my blood glucose doesnt spike much because my glycogen stores arent full because im doing moderate exercise 4 days a week minimum. If i were to indulge in a bunch of simple carbs depending upon how low my glycogen stores are will dictate my spike. If i pack my glycogen stores then the next day i notice i feel like crap and it absolutely does cause hunger. Its why constantly eating things like fruit packing your glycogen stores makes you hungry constantly snd why i think you are better off eating complex carbs on occasion with a meal of protein and fat to keep your glycogen stores partially full but not packed then your body can better regulate your blood glucose. Its my opinion from constantly testing my blood glucose for roughly the last 10 months.

The problem with these studies is they don't take into account lifestyle. A high carb meal is going to have a way different effect on a fit athlete than someone who sits at a desk all day. If you just rode your mountain bike for 3 hours, your muscles are going to suck up the glucose like a giant sponge

This explains what I experience when I have a carbohydrate heavy meal with no protien or fats. I always thought my body ramped up metabolism and burned through the carbs faster.

Over the last year of ADF combined with a near-keto (there are some oligos in the diet), when I last tried a small sugar-containing energy drink - I felt absolutely ill afterwards. Same for sweets like chocolate (excepting high-cacao dark, and that sparingly) There's no temptation any more....and if something sugar is needed, an orange is the go-to, and berries in a protein shake. And nothing else....

I used to be that way. But as I was losing weight I threw in a treat here and there. Brownies for movie night or bread with butter and now I can do that and be fine. I don't get the binge or hunger thing anymore.

Gut biome: I’m still on Keto but have been having some raw milk kefir 1/4 cup with berries a few times per week. Also, instead of a couple tbsp of almond butter as a quick snack, I’ve started having it with celery etc

Just finished eating organic slices of potatoes after it cooled from airfryer for the possibility of not ingestion all the carbs, thanks for the education Thomas.

Yes, spending at least a couple of days with pricking my finger and measuring glucose gave me a lot of information. Seriously, I found out, that as soon as I wake up glucose is higher, then it lowers down. Exercise?!! Hell yeah, it burns it, so a walk or some form of exercise in the evening definitely lowers my evening munches. Also I found out that a small piece of watermelon will not spike my glucose. Berries with keto pancakes? No spike, just a smooth low rise and drop.
Regular day on keto? Nice baseline. No spikes and the rise and fall of glucose are very smooth.
Waiting to check the low carb Italian ice cream.

Answer is true. Whenever I have a massive cheat meal of pastries pancakes, cookies, cake, pie, etc, I wake up the next morning dying of hunger

Also, the machinery or enzymes to burn fat may be altered by eating carbs, and it takes time to recalibrate or restore the macinery.

I just happened to suffer exactly this. I ate a high carb meal (cookies are my weakness :-)), and the next day was terrible I ate quite a lot. And adding insult to injury I was going even deeper to this vicious downhill. So you can imagine that I can totally relate to this story.

I just experienced this in my recent 24 hour fast. I was kinda going on a bad binge eating streak the past week, decided I needed to control myself and ate a big high protein/fat meal, no carbs, and fasted til the next morning. Felt pretty sluggish that day and the next morning, ate the same high protein/fat meal, but later that night had crazy cravings and fell victim to my gluttonous activities. Unaware of this glucose situation, since I was trying to go into a ketogenic state right after being somewhat high carb, my glucose probably plummeted and caused the cravings and hunger to kick me down. Will keep this in mind and change how I execute my future fasts.

Dude. Viome. You buy a test kit from them, you send in your test, they analyze your microbiome, and then they tell you in their app a couple weeks later which foods you should eat and which foods you shouldn’t they include information about your glucose response to certain foods, along with several other factors. Then you have the option to subscribe for custom supplements and custom pre- and probiotics that are tailored to your specific microbiome. It has completely changed my gut health, and I’ve been sleeping so much better! Retest every 4-5 months and see how your microbiome has improved. I am waiting for the results to my second test now ;)

Its so true though, like drinking large amounts of alcohol makes you want to crave everything without being aware like it's okay .. great video Thomas.

Oh well. On my birthday, I'm going to have two craft ales at the best brewery in town, followed by a 36-hour fast a day or two later. My body, he can like it or he can lump it.
