Lesson learned: Buy proper gear that doesn't REQUIRE an internet connection.

The solution is easy: Give legacy source code and tech details to the Open Source community.

Planned obsolescence to the next level.

Absolutely correct! That’s why I like devices that work offline. No apps to run; no updates; completely independent of a company’s support.

LIke Apple the real reason the headphone jack is gone, soldered everything, t2 chips, basically forced os and firmware upgrades, end of life, and many times they are extremely hard or impossible to recycle...
Dongle sales, and ability to kill devices remotely, sealed batteries.
no availability of parts, no right to repair, etc.

I can do without smart devices, including smart vehicles

if the world wants to sell disposable items, they should be sold at disposable prices, otherwise I'm not playing

Good video! If only more Sonos devices would’ve kept some connectors on the back for external solutions. They’re contributing to e-waste. My early 80’s stereo is still going strong with the AUX button permanently pressed-in.

And yet companies still place put those “voids warranty when removed” stickers everywhere on their products illegally, making honest customers guilty. Shame!

Here. It it doesn’t have physical connection, Don’t buy it.

Why doesn't Sonos open these devices to the open-source community?

I have the sales receipt for the Braun stereo system I use to this day (as the second owner).

I knew it was DUMB to buy a speaker that was hard wired to the SONOS servers. It makes no sense at all. Why can't it be a normal speaker that is also a smart speaker? They just wanted a captive user-base that they could monetize.

If my home is smart will it die in 10 years and leave me on the street?

Yep, now the companies will tell you when you can no longer use what you bought 🤣

my grandfathers fridge lasted him 60 years. Good luck finding one today that'll last 15

The problem is not that devices won't last forever, it's that Sonos literally bricks their old speakers, which might be working just fine, when you want to upgrade.

The more "smart" stuff is on the market, the more I go back to wires. If a product requires an app to work, I don't buy it.
The real problem with "smart" products is that the vast majority of them are stupid designs.

I always go for "dumb" speakers, TVs, appliances, etc. Then add a "smart" dongle to the analog input. That way whenever it inevitably fails, I have a reliable and affordable way of upgrading without throwing the actual appliance in the trash.

I think the joke goes "A tech enthusiast will stuff their homes with smart devices, a tech developer will buy hardwired from decades ago and a handgun in-case one beeps out of place."
