Amex Gold Card - My HONEST Review (After 2 Years)

In this video, we’re doing an updated Amex Gold card review where I will answer, “Is the Amex Gold card worth it for me after 2 years?” This American Express credit card is one of the most popular credit cards in the world because the Amex Gold is very focused on benefits and features involving food. So depending on your situation and some of the things we’ll discuss in this video, the American Express Gold card could be the perfect fit for your wallet - or it might be overrated and overpriced.

Some of the top Amex Gold benefits include earning 4x Membership Rewards per dollar on restaurants and groceries as well as the $120 Uber and $120 dining credits that come with this Amex credit card. Now, there is a $250 annual fee which is what people need to be careful of because if you aren’t optimizing how you use the Amex Gold, then you will end up losing money by holding this card.

So hopefully this American Express Gold card review and my experience from having it over the past 2 years will be helpful. If you are considering getting the Amex Gold anytime soon, make sure you check your numbers like I did in this video. Also, make sure you are getting the best welcome bonus possible because there is a lot of value in that with any credit cards out there!

Do you think the Amex Gold is still worth it at $250 per year? Or are there better options for a "food-focused" credit card?

I have the Amex everyday preferred cash back. 90 annual fee. 6x on groceries. 6% on streaming services. 3x on gas. 1% everything else. I don’t have kids so I don’t spend much on food. I use it for everything and I get about $60 a month back. I was interested in the gold card but the point system is kind of intimidating.

Great video. Just want to also point out that with this being a charge card instead of a credit card it has no spending limit. If you use it as your daily driver (gas, food, shopping), you will have a great credit utilization percentage because other cards are not being used

As a New Yorker I easily use the full $240 in yearly dining and Uber credits. And I was able to get an Amex corporate card through work and then I called Amex and got them to add the $100 Personal Card Annual Credit.

So Amex is now paying me $90 per year to keep their card 😮

Something crucial I think is worth mentioning. For those of us that have a corporate Amex card, if you apply for a personal Amex card you can get a recurring statement credit as long as your corporate account is open. Platinum is $150, gold is $100, Green is $75, Blue Cash Preferred is $50.

You don't get a bonus welcome offer (so for gold, it's 60k points), but the recurring $100 statement credit means you only have to use just over half of the dining credits to have an effective "no fee" card, and if you happen to use all of them then you're net positive before any rewards.

Something to consider for those that think they'll keep the card for years; the recurring credit could be worth way more than an extra 15k or even 30k welcome offer.

The part that I don’t think gets enough attention is that the 4x on groceries does not work at clubs and Walmart super centers. That is what I get about 99% of my groceries. So that makes the 4x on groceries pretty useless

Got mine a month ago. I love it. With grocery prices going up it made sense to me. I also got a targeted bonus of 90000 points.

It’s the card that keeps on giving those high rewards year after year (if ya like to eat food). But it does require some work to make it work 😬🍽

Another solid video, people seem to overvalue the credits and even the point redemption. Nice to show a pragmatic approach and an honest evaluation of the gold card. Keep up the great work, you're becoming my favorite content creator in personal finance!

For me, it’s definitely worth it but it definitely is important for everyone to evaluate whether the cards make sense for them or not!

Thank you for this honest review. I think Amex BCP for grocery (6%) with lower annual fee plus Citi Custom Cash for dining (5% if that's your top category) is way better, and you additionally get 3% for gas and 6% for streaming with BCP. Gold is a jack of all trades, master of none card. Annual fee too expensive for everyday purchases, not powerful enough for travel. Get BCP for everyday, get Platinum for travel. Gold needs to drop its annual fee by $100 then I would be intrigued

As a student with no cars driving around, I would say the dinning and Uber credit is actually quite useful. A boba with Grubhub and a Uber ride can easily spend them and I know that it doesn’t create extra spending for me. Tho I do wish they can expand the flight category and change it to travel like the green card do

One of the best reviews of this card I’ve seen, my friend. At some point, if you’re like me, you’ll slow way down on the card applications. I now find myself saying, “why get this card? I already have a card that gives me 4X back (or whatever)”. At that point, the gold will resurface in your wallet. Also, because I have the Schwab Platinum card, I can always cash out my points earned on the Gold card at a decent rate. So, it still holds a firm place in my wallet. Regarding dining credits, Amex must know that customers hate the coupon book approach. They’d have many more if the quit playing games with that and just give a straight dining credit. Thanks again. Great job.

It’s definitely a great card to have but depending on your lifestyle I can definitely understand why some people will stay away from it, especially with that annual fee. Great video as always Daniel!

We eat out and spend a lot on grocery every month. To me, amex gold is the truly all I need. Picked up the card early this year and got the 90k offer. Gonna ask for the 20k points retention offer next year. It's perfect when I'm waiting for my chase Sapphire welcome bonus to be back again. :)

The pickup options definitely does make those credits more valuable but literally almost ever restaurant around me hikes up the price by 30% for pickups outside of their own store apps.

Excellent info, thank you! I would recommend slowing down a little when you speak, I had to rewind often to process some of this info

I love using this card just due to wanting points for travel, PLUS the groceries prices went up for me, I like being rewarded for purchases.
I also use the card often to buy lunch for
coworkers to maximize points but they pay me for their lunch lol so it’s an extra. I enrolled my card in Hiltons program for restaurants to get points in selected places to get double reward. And lastly I love those Dining $120 credit for UberEats on some delivery and pick up orders. Ps Starbucks added Delta to their partnership on the app so 4x plus miles and starbucks stars for free coffee is awesome!

Yes Daniel! Would love to see that Redemption Amex video! Loved your insight on this. I have the Gold card. So far, I'm enjoying it but I love your break down on the percentage back. That really helps! Thank you!

Agree 💯 and yes AMEX needs to improve that dinning credit. Thanks for the info 👍
