Ingredients:
- 20 small rice cake sticks
- 2 tbsp veg oil (I used canola)

For the Sauce:
- 3 tablespoons Korean chilli pepper paste (I’m allergic so I used another paste. I was too lazy to make the paste from scratch but I regret not doing it🥲 so next time I’ll try to find an allergy-friendly version and make it)
- 3 to 4 tablespoons light soy sauce (I used coconut aminos instead. The brand: @thecoconutco )
- 1 teaspoon sugar
- 1 teaspoon rice vinegar
- Roasted sesame seeds (garnish)

Directions
1) If using fresh rice cake sticks, proceed with step 2. If using refrigerated rice cake sticks, boil according to instructions on package, about 5 to 10 minutes, until soft.

2) Heat cast iron skillet over high heat. Add vegetable oil and pan-fry rice cake sticks for 3 to 4 minutes per side, until lightly brown.

3) Mix ingredients for sauce together. In a mixing bowl, coat browned rice cake sticks in sauce and top with sesame seeds. Serve hot or at room temperature.

(I followed the “Tteokbokki (Korean Rice Cakes) Recipe” from seriouseats.com)

I just changed some ingredients to suit my allergies 😁

And if you can’t get tteokbokki, you can make something close by wetting and rolling 2 rice paper wrappers one after the other and then cutting them into short sections. Very close and a shelf-stable option.

Rice cakes also come in different shapes! Like thinly sliced ovals instead of the rice sticks, goes great with different sauces or soups

She’s such a trooper. I love rice cakes with peanut butter, which I’m sure would put her in the hospital.

rice cakes are made with rice flour and warm water. i would suggest you try making gnocchi with the same ingredients. it's super easy and you can make a lot and freeze them and eat them whenever and they are delicious! and you can cook them with whatever sauce you prefer! you just need to boil them a few minutes and they're ready

Best thing about Korean rice cakes you can just switch out the sauce and you have a whole different meal. It does not have to be authentic.

There are so many fun things to do with rice… the rice cakes, turning rice paper into rice cakes or rice noodles if you run out and want more before you can buy some. Rice is so versatile

“Like absorb all of my saliva kind of dry”
I have never heard such an accurate way to describe allergy-friendly foods

It always makes me happy when I see people discover foods from other cultures, especially if it’s someone who is often times limited to certain foods because of Allergies or health concerns. My dad’s diabetic and discovered he couldn’t eat as many carbs like he used to, so he missed eating lots of things on a regular bases, like grilled
Corn, but lo and behold, I introduced him to chestnuts which taste exactly like sweet corn with the added benefit of helping him digest sugars.
