Is it possible to be allergic to water? In a way, yes. But, a water allergy isn’t a true allergy. It’s a sensitivity. It can create a severe and intense pricking-like itching sensation when the person comes in contact with water. The name for this condition is aquagenic pruritus or urticaria (hives).

This may be a problem with the sympathetic nervous system. But, there are a couple of natural remedies for a water allergy you can try that may help.

Potential remedies for a water allergy:
1. Expose yourself to hot water (may deplete histamines for about a day)
2. Beta-alanine (700mg-2g twice a day)

I have had this condition for over 25 years. It made swimming with my family torture. I’ve been taking beta alanine for nearly 3 years. I used to take it every day but I only need it about once a week now to stay totally itch free. It’s amazing!

In the middle of a bad episode as I'm writing this, reading the comments of others suffering from it and describing the sensation is already quite soothing. Really excited to give this a try, if it really works you have no idea how much you've helped me

Super excited to see this video. I ve been dealing with this condition for almost 30 years. The last 15 years, I've spent in the military. I've moved several times and have had every type of water to bath in and drink that you can imagine; from well water to city water to potable water made from seawater via reverse osmosis. It never occured to me that the only periods in my life that had significant periods where this wasn't an issue were when I was supplementing for weightlifting. I have been athletic and played sports in high school and college and I routinely play sports or physically compete as an adult.
To clear some other things up that many of the commenters do not seem to understand is that this is not something you get once and it's gone in 5 or 10 minutes and it only feels like a mosquito bite. This is an iching with an intensity that is debilitating. Speaking for myself, it is nearly impossible to even think about anything else when this is happening. And it can be nearly any type of water. Not just pool or shower but rain water, the ocean, or eve sweat as stated in other comments. For the last 20 years I had been led to believe that I had a potassium deficiency, and that due to the lower salt content in my body, my skin would absorb whatever water it came in contact with. Since then I've taken added electrolytes and typically drink 1 gal or more every day... none of it helped.
The condition is so bad for some that they skip bathing all together and decide that socializing in public isnt worth the trauma. Just imagine fearing an everyday task like bathing, and what that might do to your whole life... I'm more than excited that actual research and effort is being put into better understanding this condition.

I’m 32 now. This has been one of my biggest problems since I was 7, I didn’t know it had a name. I was the only one in my family who when I took cold showers my body would be itching like a crazy person especially my legs. I even had to stop using a sponge because I was afraid of the itching. The only time I got a bit of relief was when I use steaming hot water Finally thanks Doc

It works for me..
I had this problem..In my case, it increases in rainy days..
I am using warm water in bathing and stoped using towel to dry my skin..Instead I stand beneath a fan to dry my skin..The problem is very much sorted out now.
Thank you, Dr Berg.

I was really skeptic but this worked for me. I've been dealing with this for 10 years now and I finally found something that almost completely relieves the issue. My discomfort went from 8-9/10 to 1-2/10

I have been dealing with this all of my life. I take benadryl before bath, before swimming and it also happens when I sweat. I will try this. Never seen a possible remedy so thank you!

Hello Dr. Berg I am so happy you talk about this subject almost no one knows about. I can testify it is a real problem among the people that suffer from it. I use the word suffer because most everyone needs and uses water....
However, I will contradict about the usage of hot water for relief. Contrary to hot water, I have been bathing my self with cold water all my life ever in the winter days. To put it in a perspective if I use cold water, only a few rashes come up. If I use hot water, I will develop rashes on probably ten times more. Mainly on my torso, front and back, neck and face. Cold water shower rashes topically go away about 10, 15 minutes after. Hot water rashes can last almost an hour! It is hard to try to apply lotion (now I use only organic coconut oil) is a life saver fory skin and if I'm not in a rush, I wait for most of the rashes to go away before getting dressed or it can get really uncomfortable (very itchy) Also, I tend to avoid people seeing me right after a shower because they always ask a lot of questions. It is very hard to try to explain someone you are allergic to water. Specially if you yourself can only connect the dots but don't have such diagnoses. I have had some mean comments like "ho so you don't shower" or "it must be psychological" "you can't be allergic to water, you would of died by now because you drink it!"
As a last note, my oldest sister and my daughter also have the same problem so I'm guessing it can run in the family as well. Forgot to mention, I also get the rashes when I sweat! So it all I do is very light exercise to not break a sweat.

I had a friend many years ago that had this allergy. We were outside and I dumped a bunch of water on him. He got so mad and ran home I couldn't figure out why. Then it came back and said that he was allergic to water and that he had to run home and take a really hot shower to combat it. Didn't make much sense to me but it's real.

It’s amazing, but beta alanine really works! I have a severe aquagenic pruritus caused by the interferon therapy during polycythemia vera treatment. Two doses of beta alanine (2 x 1, 2 g) mostly solved the problem!

Yes, it's a thing. I have it, but it generally only occurs IN CHLORINATED WATER. When I lived with spring water, filtered but not chlorinated, it only happened when we cleaned the tanks and added chlorine to them. A water softener has occasionally produced water that doesn't rash me out. Still. in my experience HOT chlorinated water just makes it worse.
Thanks for making this condition more widely known....

Some people might also be misdiagnosed with this. When in reality, they are actually allergic to what's IN most of our water supply. Lots of chlorine and other stuff that one might develop allergic type reactions to. Constant showering, baths and drinking of chlorine alone could bother people and block up their detox pathways. In which case, I'd recommend colder showers or warm showers but not hot. As the hotter it is the more steam and vapors to now also breath in the chlorine.

One time I had dumbly put my hands in a chemical mix that caused lots of itching for about a week. I would run my hands under hot water to the point of pain but it helped with the itching so the "treatment" was worth it.
