In this video, Tim Warner covers what TCP ports are as well as where and how TCP port numbers are used. He further describes how you can use the netstat command-line tool to find port use information. He also explains how, on Windows computers, you can use a free GUI-based tool called TCPView to better view and work with this information.

After watching this video, you will know exactly what a TCP port is and how web sockets work. You will also understand the difference between TCP and UDP protocols. Tim further delves into the many applications of TCP ports and discusses how many have been reserved for standard services such as http. He additionally explains how port numbers are used for server application configuration, service addressing, identifying rogue processes and configuring firewalls.

He also describes why TCPView is a much better tool for working with TCP ports than netstat. He further shows you how you can use it to easily find and stop rogue processes and trojans on a computer system.

I'm sure I sound like a nube when I say this, but can someone please explain ports in detail? I'm picturing a physical port on a server but I know that isn't correct. I'm new with networking but I understand TCP/IP, UDP, OSI, cabling, routing and switching, packets, etc, however, I'm studying tcp/ip more in-depth and can't grasp the concept of ports. Please help!
