MicroNugget: How to Use Wireshark to Reinforce Our Learning

In this video, Keith Barker covers how you can use Wireshark, a protocol analyzer, to reinforce and validate the details of what’s happening on your network. To understand Wireshark’s utility, you first need to develop the context of the OSI and TCP/IP protocol stacks.

Keith provides context for this useful function by digging into the OSI model and its seven layers, talking about how students are taught this and then promptly told not to use it.

The next model is the TCP/IP protocol suite, and Keith correlates the four layers you’ll see here to the OSI layers, demonstrating various similarities.

Between these two, you’ll arrive at the five-layer model Keith advocates, consisting of Physical, Data Link, Network, Transport, and Application.

He’ll open each of these sections up to show you what they consist of, then describe how you can verify the network activity on this protocol stack using Wireshark.

Hi Keith,
One of our user were not getting IP Address from the DHCP server. So, we installed wireshark in user system and observed the traffic. We saw, Discover from the client and an Offer from the server then, a request from the client. But, after the request, Server responded with a Negative Ack. And this process keep on repeating. At present, we have configured static IP in user system. But, that also doesn't seem to be stable. So what could be possible reason for  user not getting IP from the DHCP? By the way we are using Windows 2012 with R2 update as the DHCP server. This current issue is only with one user and we were not even able to reserve his Mac in the server as we were getting some error message. Kindly suggest on this.
