MicroNugget: What is Control Plane Policing?

In this video, Keith Barker covers Control Plane Policing (CPP) and how you can use CPP to protect your router’s CPU. He’ll also walk you through how to execute Control Plane Policing with class maps, policy maps, and service policies through a brief demonstration.

There’s quite a bit you can do to secure your router: routing protocol authentication, access control lists, et cetera, but there’s still quite a bit that a hacker can do to attack the router’s CPU. The next step in advanced router security is Control Plane Policing, and in this video, Keith Barker explains the theory behind this feature, the benefits it can offer you, and how to set one up. While a router’s main function is to forward traffic, that’s not its only role. In various situations, a router has to actually think about what to do, and this is referred to as the control plane. CPP focuses on securing this critical aspect of a router.

This video was brilliant. I just spent hours researching this feature of Cisco Routers, and this video explained everything I needed to know in just a few minutes. Bravo.

Awesome video Keith.  I'm a little confused as to the differences between Control Plane Policing and Control Plane Protection though?  What is the difference as to me they both appear to be protecting the control plane by policing traffic?
