From my amatuer understanding,

the cups are like packets that wrap other packets as their message/content. Each packet nested inside each other has header fields that actually make up the protocol which can be used by software/hardware to perform services.

Thank you for using a simple visual example to explain the layering process of data exchange on a network. There are many videos out there that seem to present this topic in a mystic and complicated way.
