We have a 4-month old lab puppy, hasn’t learned to potty outside consistently and we use very gentle methods. He’s learning about sit, down, stay, and heal, sleeps in his crate well. He tears up plants, still jumps on us, and will come if no distractions. When he’s distracted, he turns into a knuckle headed tornado and is almost impossible to calmed and get back on track. He’s amazingly sweet and loves everyone and we fear he’s going to run up to the wrong dog or person and get hurt. Our other dogs are well trained and obedient but little of that seems to rub off on him. We’re in our 60’s and 70’s and wonder if this breed is too much for our age. He doesn’t seem to intuitively get that not all dogs want a puppy lunging at their face, no matter how sweet he is, and has been really slow to learn when to stop when another dog growls at him, and generally has to be knocked to the ground by the other dog before he’ll stop, if we don’t get him away in time. I hear some labs stay hyper their whole lives. He gets a 40-minute walk in the morning and another 15-20 in the evening before bed. He also get training sessions and free play sessions with one of our dogs. We raised a beautiful, well bev haven labradoodle 6 years ago, but this pup is 4x as much work.

When we had are golden lab retriever, he was an excellent guard dog, we never trained him for that he just did it, he would let people near the house but then keep them there and not let them go, he did that to the paper boys he didn't know a few times or other people, but people he knew had no problem and he loved meeting them all the time, like the mail man, labs are excellent dogs, i miss him still.

My chocolate lab is very enthousiastic for all dogs and people. Sniffing around everything/everywhere. Also a favourite of the neighbourhood. Very calm and easy going inside but can be a tornado outside. She grewed up and lives in the city so very calm around loud noices like busses, trams, cyclists, trains etc

I've had 3 labs all lived til age 17 yrs and all of them were well behaved even as puppies, they did puppy things but outgrew it. LOL . My female Sally was very protective over us (her family).and a great watchdog maybe its just an individual thing but all 3 dogs were good Sally the mom was the best.

Our 8mth old Labrador is a nightmare he bites all the time. Lunges at us, bites in the back of the leg when you dont see him coming. He jumps up and bites the hands arms and it hurts a lot. He is growing at a rate and is heavy and strong. He has a professional trainer and is brilliant with commands and does his lessons twice daily with no mistakes. The he is into the biting. Even treats dont stop the biting, he takes the treats and bites again. This guy is relentless and has given me nothing but grief for the last 6mths. He was taken by the breeder from his Mum at 4 weeks so lacking the training she would have given him, leaving us in a right old mess. He walked on the lead never taught to do so, loves our neighbours Retriever and is very friendly towards her, they eat together out of separate bowls and neighter one taking from the other. He sleeps well at night and was house trained very quickly. However, my patience is worn out, as I have to retreat to my office where he is not allowed into to escape his last lot of biting before bedtime. Exhausted.
