I just rescued a Dobie here in Los Angeles. My Dobie was in a dog crate and dumped into a dumpster. I named her Samantha and she is doing fabulously. I love her so much.

I've had several Dobbs. Love them
As we have acres of land,
have horses, my Dobs ran all over our fields. They were well trained. Great dogs.

Mars was my fifth doberman. The first four were alike in many ways. Very sociable, yet protective. Mars it seems only purpose in life was to protect me and eat. Me, my wife, and my son were the only people he would allow around him. No other dogs or animals were allowed either. He was a European black and tan weighing in at 127 lbs. You can count on both hands the hours we were not together in the eight years he was alive. He got cancer. We picked up our new black and tan Doberman puppy three days ago, his name is Oscar. Angus, the Dobie before Mars, lived to be 15 and a half, 94 lbs, perfect personality, a great dog. Looking forward to a long, loving relationship with Oscar.

This is our second Doberman. The first lived 12 years, the second Doberman (Phoebe) we got at 2 months and she is 11 months. The big difference between the first and the second is I am retired now so which means we have most days to be with her. Other than that both Dobies are the same. Either my wife or myself are always with Phoebe. When we do have to leave Phoebe alone, she just gets up on the couch and quietly waits for our return. Never is she destructive or barks. Great personality, quick learner, always fun to be around, always wanting to do something, easy to socialize. The bottom line....we give Phoebe plenty of attention, plenty of exercise, plenty of love and it shows. In return Phoebe is very well mannered, very obedient, and a lot of enjoyment to be around.

Yes - Doberman's are unique!
My female had her first litter of pup's a few months ago, and the way she handled those pups was a marvel to behold. I don't think she slept for 2 months while caring for them- a supermom!
Doberman's have this way of putting everything they have into everything they do; a endearing quality that you don't see much of in this world.

My doberman/son is Zeus. Time, dedication, consistency, vet. All day, everyday, makes all the difference. Alot I hear people say is train train train. My response is learn to read your dog no matter the breed n training n all else will fall in line. Communicate with your dog, he'll talk to u in his language, figure out his language, you've figured out ur dog n all else will fall in line. Not that they will amaze u. Long live the King,

My first doberman was Ronin. I didn't have a child then and had so much time to train him. Fabulous dog. Such a quick learner and knew so many words and commands. My doberman now, Solomon will be a year in March. He is very intelligent as well and a fast learner loving to please. I train and play with him as well but wish there were more hours in the day! Best breed ever and the ONLY breed developed to protect people!! Gotta love the velcro doberman!! ❤

The only thing I'd disagree with or at the very least haven't seen it with my two dobies is the alpha thing if you're not a strong owner. I'd just say maybe they like to test their boundaries but once you get on them they'll act right again. My two listen to me just fine but my mom is a softie with them like any grandmother. They like to do things they wouldn't normally do when around me, like children lol. But I don't see it as trying to dominate, just pushing boundaries like a child would. They are my first two dogs so I may be very biased but I think they're the best breed ever. No one loves as hard as a Doberman.

As a lover and owner of 5 Dobermans (1 raised as pup and 4 rescues), I agree with your 5 points. I'd also like to add Point 6: Don't hit or scream at a Doberman of any age; pups may learn to become fearful of people. An older pup or rescue would have become Dobie discerning enough to view you as out of control. and thus no leader and not trustworthy, Dobies have marvelous hearing - so yelling is unneeded. Hitting or whacking accomplishes nothing --- with a super-smart dog you're teaching and conditioning NOT to respect you. Dobies are keenly smart, and highly discerning of human actions, cues and scents that humans give off. They can tell good vs. bad intentions in human which is why they are by nature great protectors. But the owner must earn that place as someone to protect. Dobies WANT to partner up, with their trusted leader. They'll do that when they respect you, and that comes via consistent and fair guidance (training for house rules and public rules) from the owner, . And plenty of exercise of course!! My rescues came to me like behavioral blank slates, so it was up to me to show them that by living with my house rules and accepting more advanced training for times in public or in open spaces, we could join together & have fun in life. They loved learning more, and earned their AKC obedience certificates. It did take a long time for my two rescue males to learn they'd never be hit in the early days with me, but these were moments I helped them through, Dobies may be physically tough, but they are also tender because they understand so much.

We have a dobie we rescued at 2 years of age to be a companion to our 7 year old pit / lab mix. After a few months of battling over who would be the alpha my little pit gave up. At four months they have become buddies and mirror each other. It's been a total success!

I had a doberman pinscher when I was young. I also had a rottweiler at a different time. I remember both well. The doberman was a very playful and protective dog with kids. I still acknowledge those experiences. My concerns these days are about living in an urban environment that does not have its own yard, as dobermans have a great disposition for being the "protector" dog of the family and the environment. I am living in a city right now and the contexts within which people have big dogs in condos is a concern for me -- I would not want to own a doberman (or perhaps any dog) as a condo owner -- I would prefer a fenced in yard at the least. I also understand the dobermans are good "guard dogs" for work facilities that have their own fenced in yard area. Not "junkyard" dog only...but able to "hold the range" as needed. I would want two at a time to be companions to each other, regardless of physical sex and am not personally concerned with breeding them myself. I have a substantial history on both sides of my family of dobermans as protectors.

Great dogs. I have had just about every breed dog and my Dobie is one of the best ever. She stays with me and my wife all day, goes everywhere with us and due to early socialization is the calmest sweetest dog we have ever had. Her job is to keep our 3 acres safe from all large birds, deer etc. Best darn friend a guy could have
