Can Breaststroke Swim be FASTER than freestyle!?

If there was a competition where every swimmer in the world swam 50 freestyle vs Emre Sakci swimming breaststroke (in the 25 meter pool) Sakci would beat more than 99% of the humans in 24 seconds and 95 hundredths.

This debate over what is faster breaststroke or freestyle reached its peak in the year 1844. Some people have even told us that they swim faster breaststroke than freestyle.

Let’s see how people swim breaststroke so fast and the 4 common mistakes stopping you from moving this fast.

Even the best breaststroke swimmers come to a full stop after each stroke. The legs are immobile half the time. They completely lift their head and part of their chest out of the water vertically. The knees create incredible resistance that stops all progress. So how can someone swim breaststroke so fast!?

In breaststroke the most important thing is the speed of the legs. But there are 4 main mistakes that stop swimmers from moving faster.

I am definitely looking forward to a video on the exercises for breaststroke. Breaststroke is my favourite style of swimming by far. I have got most of my technique sorted. I can swim almost as fast as some of the freestylers in my local pool and I now need more power :)

I am a guard and instructor and I have always prefered breathstoke against free style

After six months hard work with breaststroke, I am swimming quite well and fast. This month I have started freestyle and have to admit my freestyle after month will be faster than breaststroke. I spent a lot of time for analysis your movies, advices now on the top is breathing in freestyle and practice it on swimming pool. Thanks for inspiration, i saved a lot of time and I could focus on technical swimming.

I like how A-a-ron chooses to swim butterfly instead of breaststroke, thus opting for the stroke that is multiple times more difficult.

I got 99% issues resolved in breaststroke. The only thing left is fine tuning timing and leg kick. I practice daily to getting everything into subconscious.

Technically you can swim any stroke for freestyle, so it will always be the fastest

My 100 meter breaststroke and freestyle times are exactly the same. I find that breathing, and turning+underwaters, are easier in breaststroke than in freestyle, allowing me to go all out. Hopefully I can improve my freestyle so that it will be faster than breaststroke!

As a teenager I was a junior rescue guard. I was thought to not breath every stroke, since that would be inefficient and slowing me down. Instead I was supposed to breath as frequently as necessary to get enough air, but as infrequently as possible for more efficiency and speed (basically the same they thought me for freestyle). That always worked pretty good for me. The only style where we were supposed to breath with every stroke was butterfly.

Now that I just heared for the first time that you should breath with every stroke I´m confused. Is that really more efficient and faster, or is it just related to some random rules someone made up (5:47)? It would make sense if it´s just because of rules, since rescue guards usually don´t care about those at all.

This is great. I realise my arm span goes back too far and my leg kick is too slow and too wide. It feels like my legs aren’t doing anything when I breast stroke.

I like breaststroke very much, I do my warm-up & cool-downs in it. the thing that really changed my technique and helped me perfect it was not putting my hands together but pushing them palms up out in front of my head, and tuck my head in the slipstream

When you say "freestyle", you actually mean "front crawl", right?
