When they asked me I already knew my range of salaries. Yet I always start with saying "I really leave that up to my superiors when they test me with projects, I do value my work and I do consider my work to be above average". Then they hit me with a "Okay, but if we were talking in numbers, how much do you expect?" And then I give them just a bit more than the average salary in range.

Ok for anybody WHO IS READING THIS...When you are offered a interview or job, your first question should be WHAT IS THE PAY RANGE?  PERIOD.  98% of the time they will tell you, and after that you can decide to waste your time or not....Majority of the time it gave me a chuckle what they were paying and what they wanted in an applicant, some were legit and the pay was good.  ALWAYS ask range before sending resumes and interviewing, don't waste your time and don't let them waste yours.

Sorry, Aimee, but I disagree. When I interview candidates and ask them about their expectations money wise, I come from a place of making assumption that this person treats this job seriously. Which means before you came for an interview you actually were that interested in the job that you did your research not only on my company, but also on the salary ranges in our field (trade if you will) and had put it together with your level of professionalism, experience and knowledge for the position you are applying to.
So when a candidate is able to tell me right away their expectations, first of all it tells me you know yourself, your abilities, skills, level of experience and professionalism and - you actually are able to value your self objectively. It means your mind set is for work, not play around and waste my time. It also shows me is there a place to grow with my funds for this position in your vision.
When you come to the market you must have a price tag on or you won't sell the product.
And the worst answers I hear a lot are "I don't know", "I wasn't expecting that", "I've never thought about it" or "You took me by surprise..." Come on, ladies and gentlemen! You come for a business meeting, not a chat with your friend! Concentrate and DO do your homework.
And it's much easier then it sounds - no corporative espionage needed. ;) Just look around the same or similar job offers or just ask people who already working at the similar or same positions (Internet forums? friends? friends of the friends?). Pay attention on your experience, ready to give work hours, conditions of the place... and all that matters to you. If you are a very newbie get to know what is the lowest allowed salary in your country because you might have to start with just that. But you have to know. Also do know how much you want to get netto, after taxes, so you'll be able to count for brutto and start with that in your mind set. Just know as much as possible. Never give "I don't know" answer when it's about your money - the money that will allow you support yourself. Be wise about that.
Although I do agree with you, Aimee, that giving a range is much better then a stiff number. Unless you are absolutely awesome and this company wouldn't make it without you:) Then - take them by surprise and be brilliant!;)

Thank you so much for the info! I've researched because I'm trying to get hired at retail and they say body language, smiling and listening and thinking about your answers ahead of time really helps (:

Raising your voice at the end sounds so so awful at first but then I felt the tension in the air that kind of forces the interviewer to answer first which could be so incredibly effective. I am really impressed with the video just because of that.

Is giving the entire range really advisable? I mean why would they offer more than the bare minimum? unless you underestimate yourself and they really like you, I mean...

My 1 experience of this was positive. I offered a range close to the value that I thought was fair on the market at that time for my set of skills. They offered the lower value. It was positive in the sense that they were actually paying under the "price" of the market, so to say. But I reckon that in any other situations, when applying for a competitive position, you should be as aggressive as possible, in a negotiation you always get less than what you asked for.

Would an appropriate response be to the effect, "the current trend of salary range for this position is..."?

Aimee thank you for your great videos. You're very informative and I like your presentation. Maybe you can talk a little about attitude in one of your next videos. Maintaining an upbeat and positive attitude always helps. I was laid off almost 9 months ago and sometimes I find it really hard to not be depressed and down on myself due to not working for so long. I always remind myself too to not appear desperate to get a job especially since I'm close to the point of taking anything that comes along just to pay the bills. Thanks again for your good information. Oh....by the way. I would hire you just to hear your voice and accent every day.  LOL

I would like the salary to be to the high stardard the company expects.

Or answer the stupid question with a stupid question....
What do you feel my salary expectations could be?
Or
I'd like my salary expectations to be under the umbrella of the corporate structure.
Or
Just the legal minimum wage mate as advertised.
