The 5:2 diet was popularised by Michael Mosley, a passionate advocate of public health that died this year, rest in peace.

Just two days a week and not even a total fast on those two days to reverse type 2? Wow! This is great news!

I did 72 hour fast once every two weeks, thats no food for 3 days every 14 days. I lost a lot of weight and lean mass didn't change much and now am in complete remission. yes during fasting my blood glucose would drop very low but I never got dizzy, I really think losing weight is the key to fighting type 2. To top it off all my other markers such as liver and kidney function, blood presure all yet back to safe levels, Now I am working on keeping my saturated fat intake around 5-6%

Another excellent summary - clearly articulated and thorough, all in under 10 minutes! Gil delivers every time and declutters all of the information put out by healthcare grifters out there. Thanks!!

Thank you so so much for this clinical trial!!! Just started OMAD eating. Following my instincts. Feeling hungry only once a day and then eating super nutritious and balanced whole foods. Zero processed stuff. I am planning to fast 2 days. I want to completely get rid off body fat. Thank you.

Thank you for a good summary! I tried 5:2, and it helped a little for my insulin resistance (called "D2" 30 years ago, but I never took the "medication" ) but I had too long been eating too much and too mixed (good/bad) food. So i tried an other one, the "low carb, good fat (butter, Extra V, cream) some fish, eggs but no red meat or lean (ca 40 years now, and have no excess wait) and moderate intermittent fasting (13-15 hours mostly), during the last ca 2-3 years, and it's working as for the glucose. But it is a little "messy" for me and quite much to do (living alone and in a few months I'll fill 80!) So I intend to combine the two to save some time for more outdoors! Veritatis Missio

Thanks for the video, Dr Gil, and for including the citation for the study. This study is promising, with strong study design and good sample size.

Would’ve been interesting to have another group, where those two days were full on water fasts.

If anyone else was interested in the composition of the 790kcal on the fasting days, the study lists it as "∼25% of energy from protein, ∼55% from carbohydrates, and ∼20% from fat"

This is probably by far the most effective weight loss plan.

Some doctors say that losing weight helps with diabetes, no matter how you lose it.

Maintenance is the hardest. That’s what I am doing, or trying to do now. Thank you for the information.

I love 5:2. I've been doing it for a decade now. I get about 400 cals on the fasting days. Great for controlling weight, and enjoying food on the non-fasting days.

Thanks. I have tried my own plant based version of the Longo 5 day FMD, which has a similar calorie content per day. I did not have diabetes or prediabetes, but it made me feel very good. I will try the 2 day per week version.

Thank you doctor for your informative videos. Do you have any videos on gut health and relationship to sleep etc?

Please give Dr. Michael Mosley credit for popularizing the 5:2 diet after he did this kind of fasting to reverse his type 2 diabetes. Before him nobody had ever heard of it.

All participants in that study were overweight, so their health improvements might be attributed to their weight loss. However, what about people who have a normal BMI but impaired insulin sensitivity? What are effective strategies for them? It would be interesting to read some studies.

Would like to see results of a trial where participants were not overweight and did not lose any significant amounts of weight.
