This was back when Jon thought that all members of the Nights Watch were as noble as his uncle.

Jaime was speaking from experience and regret here. He joined the Kingsguard at 15 thinking it was a huge honour, but had to serve mad, drunk, cruel and weak kings, alongside child rapists and sycophants. So he was just trying to influence Jon to think twice about such a huge decision which might not turn out the way he expected. Turns out he was right, as Jon was initially disappointed with the reality of the Night's Watch, and later on they even killed him. Jaime wasn't being an asshole needlessly, he was trying in his own way to counsel Jon against huge rash decisions.

“If not, it’s only for life.” Interesting quote now after that ending.

I feel like Jaime is actually being kind here. He’s telling Jon the things that nobody else would that firstly, it’s not as good as the stories make it out to be and secondly that life long orders are not great

This wasn't Jaime disparaging Jon although we are meant to assume he was just being a prick. This was Jaime subtly lamenting his own fate as part of the Kingsguard.

I think this was jaime's way of trying to tell Jon "seriously, you're gonna regret this decision, I joined the kings guard and I regret it you think this will be any better?" I don't think it was him simply being a dick

When I first watched this scene, I thought Jaime was just being an arrogant prick.
Now, I realize the significance of the “It’s only for life” line. Jaime was actually projecting his own regrets of taking the Kingsguard oath here, almost trying to warn Jon that he’ll regret his decision also.

I love how at 0:30, Jon, a trained swordsman and son of a lord (even if a bastard) seems genuinely afraid of Jaime. This is a great observation of how power works: family name, social status, reputation and of course his own awareness of those strengths makes Jaime a seriously intimidating character in the early seasons. The inexperienced and introverted Jon is eaten alive by Jaime’s cocky confidence. I realize it was Jaime’s arc to find humility and compassion (even in the books), but his character was a lot more interesting as the cold-blooded, spoiled killer in this scene and others (the one where Ned is speared through the leg in particular. When he stabs Ned’s lifeguard through the eye remains one of the most shocking villainous moments in GoT in my opinion).

Jamie is blissfully unaware he is talking to the King of the Seven Kingdoms haha

Ahhh back when Jaime's arrogance was only matched by his sword skills.

Wow they've both changed so much as people in the past 7 years. This series is so amazing in how the characters grow and evolve over time.

I love the focus on Jamie’s right hand during that handshake.

They focused on that handshake, now that is some super early foreshadowing!!

Ironically enough Jamie was the only one to actually bother enough to tell Jon what the Nights Watch was like, he’s nothing if not honest about it.
