It's so clear looking back that Jaime looked up to Ned, and he hated his honor being insulted despite doing the right thing.

There is much depth in this scene, even a short scene with dialogue says so much about both characters. Jaime desperately wanted Ned’s approval and it ate at him that an honorable man like Lord Stark never respected him. It was as if Jaime said “fine, I’ll be the prick everyone tells me I am” when really he just wanted respect and people to understand why did what he did. Even in season 6 Jaime tells Lord Edmure that he never liked Ned but that was just because Ned was the person Jaime always wanted to be perceived as…someone honorable. The way Ned lands the word “safe” at the end was like an arrow piercing at Jaime’s pride. Brilliant acting

Ned has a certain point, I dont think he despises Jamie for breaking his oath, he despises him because he from his pov Jamie broke the oath not when his father and brother were killed but only when it was safe, when tywin had already come into Kings Landing. However he does not know Jamie was forced to do it because the mad king wanted to burn down Kings Landing

1:45 is the look of a man that has just been genuine for a second and it just gets thrown back in your face 😢

I love how different this scene is when you rewatch it after season 3 compared to the first time. First time we see this scene, it's satisfying to see Ned put Jaime down with such a cutting line, since we only know what Ned knows. But now, we sympathise with Jaime, since his actions were genuinely honourable. His comebacks at Ned are recontextualised from him just being a smartass to a display of genuine frustration at the fact that his selfless actions have resulted in everyone viewing him as a dishonourable coward.

Ned is saying Jaime only killed the Mad King when it was convenient and obvious that the rebellion was prevailing. The second Jaime knew his father was taking the city he immediately betrayed his oath and stabbed Aerys in the back because it was "safe" to do so.

That is why Ned despises Jaime so much and yet admires Barristan Selmy and Arthur Dayne even though they were also present when his father and brother were burned alive.

Unlike Jaime, they kept their oath to the Mad King not only when it was convenient and safe but also in the end when it was hopeless to continue fighting for the Targaryens. That is the point Ned is making in this clip.

What i like about Jaime is that when someone's in trouble, he always has a hand to lend.

I love this scene because Ned is always seen as this super honest man but when he sees Jamie every single word he speaks is extremely sarcastic and cruel lol. Seeing Jamie just triggers him

I love when he tells him he doesn’t have a scratch on his armor😂😂😂

@tehren99 "You served him well when serving was safe" pretty much means that Jaime only turned on Aerys when it was safe to do so. He's pretty much calling Jaime a bitch who only stands up for his principles when he knows he'll win. Otherwise, he'll just stand there and hold his tongue while innocent men burn.

"Tell me, if I had stabbed the Mad King in the belly instead of the back, would you admire me more?"

You can tell how much Jaime respected Ned and how much being despised by him annoyed him.

This is absolutely word for word from the books. Amazing.

This was one of the few times where Ned wasn't actually the one in the right. All Ned can see here is someone who broke a sacred oath. Yes, Jaime did do that, but he avenged the deaths of Rickard and Brandon Stark, and also saved the lives of everyone in the city. But Ned can't see past that, and you can clearly see Jaime's words do have some affect on him, but he's blinded by his sense of honour.

It's reflective scenes like this that make me want to each a whole new direct prequal of Roberts rebellion,

These two don't get nearly enough credit for their scenes together. All anyone ever talks about is Tyrion, Robert, Bronn, Baelish, but this is easily one of the single best conversations in the whole show and it's delivered masterfully by these two actors. I wish the show had actually portrayed the scene of Ned walking into the Iron Throne room to find Aerys II dead at the steps and Jaime sitting on it instead of merely describing it to us in dialogue, perhaps even as the very opening scene. It could have effortlessly communicated so much story to the audience without a single word spoken and added more weight to this scene.

Sean Bean is such an unreal, beautiful actor.

I like that after getting his jabs in, Jaime genuinely tries to sympathize with Ned and explain himself, only for Ned to throw it back in his face. So Jaime immediately closes off again.
